It's not just that, they use much less power, are much quieter and it also looks like they run a little faster than the phats too.
 
Ive got a problem with everybodys golf in that it wont load once its installed and when i exit the game i get 3 short beeps,it worked when i had the 120gb drive in but wont play with the 320gb drive?

Think I got stitched up a bit, but couldn't be arsed to argue. They wouldn't let me trade back CoD4 (manager haxxed me!), so I just took it - can always trade that back with the parents' 40GB later. Traded back all 8 games which netted me about £37 (some really old gank ones like NHL 2K7, PES 2008). So all in all I had to pay £13+ which was ok I guess.

Quick question - what was the security seal like on your boxes? The one on mine is just a crappy bit of sellotape... not opened yet!

Oh yeah - they didn't even bother to power on my 60GB (or even take it out of the box). Could have filled it with bricks and they would have never know :p:D I guess they don't insult the more reputable-looking customers by querying the contents of trade-in boxes... (see earlier post :o:p).

Oh and the mirror finish under the BD drive - niiiiice :D feels very solid in my hands as well. I was expecting something a lot more plasticky!

Bluray and DVD playback which were the main comparisons when it came to DB are still quieter on Slim, and thats not a lucky dip. The "lucky dip" you're referring to is general system sound. Which my friend is lucky enough to have had a jackpot quiet one. I've been playing with it :D Not to listen to the drives or anything, that'd be sad. I went through MGS4 for a bit again.

My point still stand whats the point in quieter bd/dvd playback when the General system noise is very loud?

Nice one for your mate but plennty of disappointed people on the web getting very loud slims.
 
My slim is ultra quiet.

It was never silent (60GB launch), but it was noticable when it was turned on. Now, you have to double check the power light :D

Powered on my slim and left it on for about an hour... it's audible (which is annoying), but nowhere near as loud as my fat would be. Also this is against the slim out in the open vs. the fat in my AV cabinet. Disc playback is a bit more annoying though, as the BD drive makes a fair "whoosh" when it's spinning :(

Bigpig, can you link to other forums where people are commenting on noise please?

I don't like to link mate but google brings up a quite a few results. Some people getting extremely loud slim which they are taking back to the shop

Check out avforumsIGN/gamespot/playstationforums etc

a fair few reports on AVF about these being not as quiet as some may think they are.
My 40GB's are whisper quiet and i dont want to add any noise so i think i will be sticking to my phats for now but i do want a slim (noise-free!). The only reason i want it is for Bitstreaming
 
Audio levels are very much perceptive.

Obviously you could measure levels with a meter, but if you're hearing is shot then it's a pointless set of numbers.

Too many people worrying over nothing. If it's noticably louder than your old console.. replace it under warranty :o
