The Police Application Thread

Does anyone know much about the PSNI application process? Seems they only recruit once a year and 2009 applications have already passed! Is there any other route in or anything that would be productive in the mean time? I've had relatives in the police and it's definitely something I'd be interested in doing.

Aye I was reading that before. Really just wondered if anyone had a more personal experience and how strictly they kept to the "once a year" recruitment campaigns in the past. I read on the recruitment website that it isn't set in stone so was kind of hoping they might run a second this year or an early 2010 campaign.

I think it used to be two recruitment phases per year, but I think they are reasonably up to strength at the moment (and more than likely over budget) and it's being cut down to one phase a year for the forseeable future.

From people I know that have done the procedure, it takes around one year from applying to getting offered a position - be aware that it's massively oversubscribed also (approx 9000-1000 people applying for 200 odd posts)

There's no other way in as far as I'm aware either - apart from Part Time positions which are advertised the odd time. Even this isn't a "foot in the door", as you have to apply like everyone else even if you're a part timer!

Well, today's the day for my 1st step on the journey that'll hopefully make me a Police Officer one day. The "recruitment window" for Cheshire opens today, and I'm required to send an email between the hours of 10am and 6pm to book a slot on one of 4 seminars to take place toward the back end of the month. I've currently got the email composed in Thunderbird, and I'm just hovering over the send button awaiting the appointed hour. I've kept it short and straight to the point, as I don't think the recruiters would appreciate ploughing through an essay at this point when all they need is your contact details and your choice of date in order. Funnily enough though, I find myself feeling quite nervous, all for the sake of sending a simple email. :o

Just send it Funk. There is no need to send a massive email, as it won't achieve much. Just register your interest and go along, watch the video's, speak to the police officers there and see if it's your thing or not.

Well my assessment centre was due to be this Tuesday 28th, but after being diagnosed with swine flu, various calls to the Met Careers team and sending a doctors note I am now not able to go.

They said they will book me onto the next one which is due for September time, bit of a pain in the arse having to wait longer but in all honesty I wasn't prepared so it is perhaps a blessing in disguise.

At least I don't have to fill in the application again :p

How is everyone else getting on?

Well, off to the recruitment seminar at Cheshire's Force HQ in Winsford bright and early tomorrow morning. Just drove the route there to make sure I know it and don't turn up late thanks to getting lost enroute. Must say that I'm looking forward to it, but not quite sure what to expect really, except to see a couple of presentations, slideshows etc, then receive a talk from a senior officer perhaps. By the way, the dress code's been defined in my invitation email as "Smart Casual". What the hell does that mean?
