The Police Application Thread

I'm intrigued, but I don't want to intrude! :)

Hope it works out for you though killsta :)

I'm not bothered at all about sharing, it's not a personal matter.

Just beware - even after you've passed everything, including final board interviews, and you're just awaiting a start date, forces will still think of new hurdles to put in your way.

In my case, they've dreamt up a whole new recruitment stage that would cost me over £1k.

I was dreading this thread resurfacing. Just to add my story...

Passed PIRT
Passed Assessment Centre
Passed Medical
Passed Fitness
Passed Drugs Test
Passed Induction coursework (4 week course)
Failed Vetting

When asked why, they wouldn't say because of Data Protection

I wrote an appeal letter as I meet the home office recruitment criteria - no criminal record, no debt, no family history etc. Nothing.

Anyway, they responded a week later saying they cannot disclose the reasons and they "consider this the final correspondence". Oh and I am not eligible to reapply. Ever.

Now, my grandfather served in the SAS, which I didn't declare but that's the only thing I didn't declare on the security vetting form. Why bother? He doesn't live with us anymore.

Seriously messed up

That sounds terrible - knowing you've been as open as (we assume) you've been, and not getting a proper reason.

Perhaps request the info under the data protection act?
Information about you

If you ask for information about yourself, different rules apply to the way your request must be handled, because you have slightly different rights to this information. Requests for information about you are covered by the Data Protection Act.

The Data Protection Act applies to more organisations than the Freedom of Information Act, because it also applies to private organisations like banks, utility companies and other businesses (which are not covered by Freedom of Information).

Organisations have up to 40 days (just over a month) to answer requests under the Data Protection Act.

They might also charge you up to £10 - the law allows them to do this.

More information about your rights under the Data Protection Act

Organisations are allowed to refuse your request if:

* disclosing the information would also mean giving out information about someone else, or identifying them as the source of confidential information. (In this situation, the organisation is not obliged to grant your request unless the other person has consented to their information being disclosed, or it is reasonable in the circumstance to answer the request without their consent.)
* disclosing the information would be likely to prejudice the prevention or detection of crime, or the apprehension or prosecution of offenders.

That's awful EVH.

It sounds like, and I am only guessing here, that there may be an issue with someone else that you have placed on the application such as a family member ?

I agree.

I was reading that some lady was rejected because her boyfriend of 7 years was charged and fined with common assault - TWO YEARS before they met (ie. 9 years ago).

Like i said, if you really want to know, start digging into your family. Remember Dr House's golden rule: "Everybody Lies". It may be one of your close family has done something which they are not proud of and have never told anyone about.

Alternatively, are your/your families finances ok?

Urgh, i read about this i think. Don't they want you to do some course which you have to fund yourself?

Not that I can tell.

Also the fact the 'course' is 1 day per week, costs over £1k, and I live over 6 hours away from the area.

How anybody in my position with a full time job, even if they lived locally, could see it to be viable I do not know.

I'm not sure, it's all very confusing.

The letter I received basically said there's an intake in September 2010 and January 2011. Both of which they are looking to fill with applicants who have completed the course.

If you don't go on the course you just sit in the queue of people waiting to start, but they have no idea when it will be.

I've travelled the 200-odd miles on numerous occasions to take, and pass, all the of the recruitment stages. They've now moved the goalposts.

Bitter, me? Never :)

I've basically told them I'm not interested in the course, but am still keen to join via the normal route.

Will wait a while and see how it pans out. I'm not about to tell them what I think about it incase it indirectly affects my application...

Any Police staff on here? If so what do you do? I'm a CCTV Co-ordinator for a large a force, looking to move onto the Met though in the near future, a vacancy has come up which has my name written all over it hopefully! :D

Didn't realise you guys had one of these threads!

I applied earlier on this week to Hampshire as a Special. I live in Northam, Southampton... if you've ever been there you'd know why I've come to the decision :p all in all I've always wanted to be a part of policing, but can't really justify doing it as a full time job as my calling will always be working with technology.

I'm excited about it but admittedly have some stumbling blocks, my credit rating is shot and although I don't have CCJs and have never been bankrupt I don't know how much it will count against me. I'm also in a rare circumstance having been adopted, my biological family are a shady bunch, but I've not grown up with them and don't associate with them. Will be interesting to see how vetting reacts to this situation.

My partner applied too, although she's more worried about the competency based interview. Doesn't really bother me, I work in public sector and have been on the recruitment panel in competency based interviews and feel like I have a good grasp of what they're going to ask and how I need to answer. We shall see though! Exciting stuff :)

What sort of debt do you have currently?

Mostly credit card/loan debt in the region of 10k. I went to the CCCS a couple of months back and am on track now, but have had a lot of defaults against my record. I've never missed a mortgage payment, but it doesn't count for much.

I've just been bad with my money, self confessed. I know I don't need extra money and wouldn't be bribed or swayed financially in any way. But the way I've managed my finances to date probably won't reflect that, although admittedly I don't know how the police work it out.

I've been told it's situational, and I plan to either have a discussion or do a write up with my vetting form to explain my situations. I can only try, and if it does prohibit me I'll simply have to wait a few years until my creidt rating is clean.

I'm not going to get my hopes up too much, and learn from it should it go against me.
