Filter actually :p

That's what happens when you have a 4 second exposure at f/32 :p

One more.

Feel a bit like Ralph Wiggum on about his cat, but hey. :) My first attempt with a 400D and manual settings. Used AF, any guesses as to whether I would have been able to get a sharper image on MF or is that more down to the standard 18-55mm kit lens I'm using? (Apologies for the noobish question, I am working my way through TP forums slowly trawling for tips!)

I don't think your going to get a sharper shot on Manual Focus in this instance because I think the focus us actually fine (on the iPOD screen at least). Similarly, the kit lens probably isn't to blame because they tend to be pretty sharp (not perfect, but pretty good). I'd guess the shutter speed is probably going to be causing any blur (not that I can see any evidence of that). Try to use 1/Focal length of second.

One thing I might suggest Randal24 is to shoot in Raw Format and then use Digital Photo Professional (comes on the CD included with your Camera) to make adjustments to the picture. You will find you can make alterations to the sharpness of the shot, contrast, colour hues etc., Think of the RAW format as a negative that needs a little tweaking to bring out the best.

I'll give that a crack, just been reading up on focal lengths so next time I can get the Mrs to hold the cat I'll give it another go. I'm pretty impressed with the kit lens all in all, but I guess I'm comparing my shots to some of the wonder work in this thread which is most likely using expensive glass (and considerably more talent!). I'm definitely on the hunt for a nifty fifty once I've had a chance to play around with the kit lens some more.

I think I've got the RAW still on the memory card for that, I just used the JPG and left the RAW for playing around with later on. Do you know if the software on the CD is Mac compatible? Guessing I can do that sort of stuff in PS too?

Shame the ear has been cropped.

I was thinking that as I posted it, in retrospect I should have probably posted this one but I preferred her expression to this one:

I think you'd be surprised how much sharper you can get with a nifty fifty (50mm F1.8 II) lens, Canon's cheap lens. You have to zoom with your legs but on my 400D it is loads sharper...however you do have the IS lens which is better than my kit lens :-)

Mind you, there isn't much in it...;)

Randal24,

yes there should be Mac versions of the Software on the Canon CD. If you have access to PS you probably will be able to do more with that than the Canon stuff.

Must admit I like the second shot more, ears intact and the 'expression' looks better. I sound mad but I get the distinct impression from the first photo you published that the cat is annoyed, whilst in the second the expression is one of curiosity!

nice shot frank, what focal length did you shoot at?

EDIT: Nevermind, i just googled the Panasonic FZ28 (didnt realize it was one of those superzoom bridge cams), so i presume you shot at the long end of its superzoom capabilities. I own a similar camera -Fuji S8000fd. I used it for 4 months before the urge to own a DSLR was just too strong to resist :D

Walked the dog earlier round our local lakes, (took my camera on any off chance) and came across this swan, almost posing for me :)
