• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

The Radeon RX 6900/6950 XT Owners Thread.

I've literally tried everything with this piece of card. Just stays on a black screen Nvidia wouldn't do that.

I'm sending it back, as it will not work  it won't even boot into safe mode

Well i got my Merc running at 15% power limit and a clock speed of 2728mhz during gaming with 99% usage on the GPU.

What else could i now try @LtMatt ?
What power is it drawing under load? You’ll need up to 400W for RT titles at that clock speed. Other less demanding titles will draw around 350W.

Sounds good though. Validate your overclock by running time spy Extreme and see what score you get.

If you power limit is set below 400W for RT titles, and under 350W for non RT titles, you'll probably be holding back some performance, despite the clock speed showing over 2700Mhz.

LtMatt do you always raise your power limit even for everyday use? I saw you mention 300W somewhere. The most my stock Sapphire Nitro has drawn is about 320W in Control with RT. Cyberpunk with no RT but Ultra 285W. This is with the sliders upto 2700mhz. I think my Nitro has slightly higher default Draw anyway. Would raising in MpT see any benefits?

Yes. However, for 24/7 use i run lowered clocks (from my cards default which is 2469Mhz) and voltage. The 6900 XT is so fast that I can run all my games at high enough FPS that overclocking is not needed unless benching or perhaps recording a video for YouTube.

So my 24/7 settings are 400W in MPT, 2300/2400Mhz core clock in Radeon Software, which results in 2350Mhz in games. I run a voltage of 0.950v (+/- 0.025v) - (1.050v set in Radeon Software) this is actual voltage as read by HWINFO64. Default is 1.175v so this is a big reduction of over 0.200mv+.

These settings result in power draw under 100% load of around 225-260W, depending on the game and if Ray Tracing is used. With these settings i can run my fan speed at 25% 1250RPM+ which is silent and keeps junction temp at or below 100c.

If I am recording a video to upload to YouTube, I'll run overclocked at 2655-2755Mhz in Radeon Software and have the memory at 2124Mhz. This results in an in game core clock of 2700Mhz+.

If i am running Resident Evil 8 with Ray Tracing enabled i have to knock 30Mhz off that clock speed to gain stability. Ohter games like Dirt 5 run fine with the clocks above.

Ultimately I want this GPU to last a while due to the crazy component prices these days so I am treating it with baby gloves for the most part and going with the undervolt and silent fan speed. :)

Yeh even with the stock draw on my card it’ll handle everything I throw at it so is it worth raising in MPT? This will increase the clocks stability to a higher value I guess? Are you running on air too?

Stock draw +15% Power Limit in Radeon Software is sufficient for most things. However there will be some performance left on the table unless you use MPT to increase the limit.

Yeh I see. I will have a play then and set it to 300W. That is the only value you touch isn’t it? Everything else left alone.

These are the values i use, though the Power Limit is the most important.

With the values above i can switch between my saved GPU Tuning profiles depending on what I'm doing knowing that i won't run into any power limits. :)

If you still need help a full spec for your machine would help, also if you can get into the bios every time but not windows have you tried a reinstall ?

Machine
Intel Core i9 CPU, Gigabyte Motherboard , Gigabyte 6800XT, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 750w Gigabyte Gold PSU, using 65" OLED as Screen. This works well with 3080 when I used that card.
The card itself looks stunning and the cooling is amazing! Hands down better cooling than Nvidia on the VRAM (Shame on Nvidia). But Nvidia performs better and never had these issues with Nvidia.

Problem
So the card will show the bios pretty much consistently. Then 1second after it posts a black screen. On 1 out if 15 attempts, it will post into Windows 10. Two times I've managed to get in to Windows 10 after pressing F8, but it was some kind of low resolution mode (Driver Uinstaller was used but said it was not safe mode).

Questions & Answers
  • I have not tried a fresh install, as it might black screen on the reboot.
  • How can I get this to work?

I think it was drawing 322W under load, not got timespy is that free software ?

Have you tried DDU once in windows ? I had no end of issues using my C9 for a monitor, even on the 3090 i initally tried months ago.

Yes I used DDU to uninstall all drivers. That's not it.

I'm going to install to a new system, so new mobo, cpu, Ram, HD and OS and see what happens .

Ok LtMatt I just tried your MPT settings and ran Timespy. I beat my best score and got 17112 graphics 20920. It used all of its power limit upto 400W. 70C hotspot was 105C is this acceptable for this test. I didn’t have max fans anywhere near. I’m
Guessing normal gaming will draw less will try later.

Yep that's acceptable and normal. Timespy will draw 400W, even slightly more on brief peaks if allowed. Score looks about right too. :)
