That's quite bad, it's not abnormal to see games use more vram on amd cards, but I have surprised to see that 16gb vram isn't enough on the amd cards, that's several gb more than the cutoff on Nvidia
Quite a few sites have always noted how amd use more vram than nvidia but no one has really done a proper look into it and it's not always clear cut as iirc, for f1 22, nvidia use more vram than amd but it does seem to be a bit of a common theme now, there could be 2 ways to look at it:
- nvidia cheating by lowering IQ in ways we can't see, although if "cheating", maybe that is the wrong word to use as it isn't noticeable to be pointed/called out, therefore more "optimisation" and being efficient with their methods
- amd poor optimisation when it comes to vram usage especially if they rely on SAM/rebar to overcome any potential vram management issues
But still, given this is 100% technical sponsorship and even done by nvidias own studio and using their tools, it is never going to put amd in a good light, obviously they won't come anywhere close to nvidia but they are defo capable of getting more than 1 fps, they should be performing about where turing is in this.
I wonder if the vram heavy usage/issues is down to the way the textures have been updated/replaced as well i.e. iirc, remix does this for you so I can't imagine optimisation in terms of loading in and dumping assets/textures when no longer needed etc. is done too well.....
