Contemplating upgrading from a 1600x to a 3600. My main use is for games and my Lightroom workflow, will there be noticeable gains in games? I don't expect any improvements in Lightroom though. My mainboard currently is the Asus b450 Strix f, will this be ok for the 3600? I probably won't be doing any manual overclocking but would like to do some auto OC.

1600x is still very capable. You might be better off waiting for the 4000 series to drop and upgrade then. Most boards will still support it.
Oh I have no doubt it is and have no complaints really. However my son's 2500k build has just decided to pack up and he has been on at me for ages to get him something more modern, so my thinking
is kill two birds with one stone and let him have my current CPU and ram and move onto the 3600, but I am still trying to work out if I should go for the 3600 or 3700x. My thinking was to get him a cheaper b450 board and keep my Strix.

I went from a 1600 to a 3600, it was a big upgrade for those games that are usually strangled by per core performance, that's much higher on Zen 2, about 25 to 30%. Cinebench R15 ~160 ST @ 3.9Ghz OC to 200 out of the box with the 3600.

Oh fair enough yeah! If the main aim is gaming, then its definitely worth the upgrade to Zen2! 3600 is definitely a better option than the 3700x if all you want to do is game as you save money, but if you're planning on keeping this PC for a while, and do more than just game then its much better to go with the 3700x
Yeah that was what I was seeing from a lot of reviews, that said i'm sure my son will be delighted to have 1600x in his new build.
Well, that is my dilemma. My primary work is a photographer, so I need something that can handle PS and to a lesser extent Lightroom - not that the 1600x has been bad, but i'm thinking get the 3700x maybe due to the more cores? I am also looking at getting into a bit of video work, so more ram and a beefier CPU will aid me
when editing in Da Vinci resolve - in the end, though it still comes down to best bang for the buck, hence why I am looking more at the 3600, but I do plan on keeping this system running for at least a couple of years, with only a change of GFX card on the horizon next.

Oh in that case I would definitely recommend the 3700x, and depending on your budget would even go as far to say that you can go for a 3900x. 3900x with 12 cores is fantastic for gaming, and will help massively with photoshop and renders etc. Definitely makes it much more futureproofed as well, so you'll be fine using that even several years down the line.
Actually finding a 3900x somewhere is a different question though

The prices of the 3900X and 3950X should go down. Especially now that intel HEDT line up is half the price of previous generation. Intel has been screwing consumers apparently and these are the true prices of their cpus. lol

Thats fair enough, then I recommend the 3700x for sure. 8 cores with great IPC is still fantastic for all round use and you will definitely notice the difference. Its still very well future proofed as well.

I saw that on GN's stream last night.
What i thought was a little shill from Steve was that he thought that the 10 core Skylake-X refresh at $590 was "a good competitor for the 3900X", citing its better gaming performance. n' no.... Steve, its a hell of a lot better than what the 7900X was priced at but Skylake-X (A is supposed to be a HEDT chip not a gamers chip and (B because of its mesh architecture has lower gaming IPC even than Zen+
As for the rest, a very bold move by Intel, from $600 to $1000 10 cores to 18 cores.
Bring on Threadripper 3000: 24 Core, 32 Core, 48 Core, 64 Core.
Skylake-X vs Zen+ gaming performance.

I just built, without tuning or doing anything to a base 3600 on a tomahawk max, with the 8pack 3600mhx 16161616 stuff, i did bios update to abba

I don't thin you will have massive improvements by moving to another board, but when abba is available for yours and the next microcode batch after that you will likely see improvements exactly where you are

Nothing, outside of pcie 4 support. Performance will be the same. My 3600 can easily be pushed to 4,3 on my budget aorus m b450 board on stock voltage and that increases the score to 503 single thread and around 3700+ multi thread score in r20. Just overclock it.

Finally got around to switching BIOS on the B450 Carbon to ABBA - performance difference is minimal really.
