The Ryzen 5 3600 Discussion Thread

I have a 1080Ti at the moment but not the fastest ram. I don't really overclock anymore. I won't be selling the 1700. Moving the Motherboard, Ram and CPU into my UNRaid server and replacing the 2500K setup that's there already.
Fast RAM is certainly useful for performance but it's not as useful as it was with Zen/Zen+.

What power plan do you guys use?

It seems if I set my power plan to anything but windows power saver when I'm on desktop the bloody CPU just sits at 4.4GHz, it also looks like the voltages are high in any of the ryzen modes particulary the high performance mode?

I have no idea what to trust CAM/HWInfo says cores at 4.4Ghz Ryzen master is saying 500Mhz lol, this is with high performance turned on and I just grabbed the latest chipset driver.

Do people know this?
Figured out how get this Ryzen 3600X boosting to it's advertised 4.4Ghz. Although, at a sacrifice of the other core clocks but I reckon this is better for games that sometimes use 1 or 2 cores at full load.

Looking to upgrade my aging 4690K to a 3600 prior to starting my PhD. As I won't be upgrading for a while after - 970 Evo Plus for the OS and programs is already overkill - and not likely to upgrade my 1080, I've chosen the Strix B450-F. Anyone got any objections to a choice like that? Seems to be well recommended as far as I can tell, and have used - and liked - Asus boards in the past. Won't probably overclock the chip, as it'll be such an upgrade from the aged 4.5Ghz chip I have. :D

Good board but the BIOS will need upgrading BEFORE it will work with the 3600 https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-B450-F-GAMING/HelpDesk_BIOS/

If you don't have an older Ryzen you will need the Ryzen 3000 upgrade kit from AMD https://www.extremetech.com/computi...pgrade-kit-for-ryzen-3000-motherboard-updates

Its free.

If you need a CPU to perform a UEFI update, AMD will ship you one, provided you have made a valid purchase of a 3rd gen Ryzen CPU and can’t boot the motherboard due to a UEFI update issue. Send AMD a photo of your CPU (with serial numbers visible) and a copy or summary of communication with your motherboard manufacturer to indicate why support from the OEM won’t resolve the problem. AMD’s help page goes through several options that may help users fix the problem without needing a new CPU, but whether these work will depend on whether the motherboard supports features like UEFI / BIOS flashback.

AMD will ship users an Athlon 200GE with prepaid return shipping to perform the update. The CPU must be returned within 10 days, but users are free to keep the included thermal solution if they so desire. Those who need to apply for a kit can do so here. Include your CPU serial number in the product details and enter the phrase “Boot kit Required” (without quotes) in the “Problem Description” field.

Is it worth getting a 3700x or sticking with a 3600/3600x for gaming?
Depends how long you plan to keep the CPU for. If you plan to upgrade to Zen 3 in late 2020, for example, stick with 6 core. If you're keeping it for 5 years, definitely get the 8 core (to keep up with consoles).

Have almost made up my mind, going to go with the following.

AMD 3600 CPU.
16BG Corsair Vengeance DDR4 Ram, 2x8 sticks running at 3600Mhz.
MSI MPG x570 Gaming plus motherboard.

Upgrading from

AMD 1700 CPU.
MSI x370 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard.

Not much of an upgrade for my desktop, but, it's more that I want to move the Ryzen 1700 into my Unraid/plex server. The 2500K that's there will be moved into my brothers PC, he is still using a core2 duo!! So it will be a nice jump in performance for him.

Nice, the R7 1700 is in my file server and does great for transcoding even when undervolted at stock clocks. Good choice.

Can you give up CAM? Open just one app at a time.

Added: I use the Ryzen high performance mode, at idle it spends a lot of time around 1.45v, this is completely normal, during gaming this is also normal, if the CPU is encoding or rendering or anything that stresses the CPU to max then and only then should be running at no more than around 1.35v
