*** The SKY F1 2012 Coverage Thread ***

Recorded the race only to find out it used 20% space (on a 500GB sky+hd box), good job I was able to watch the practices and the qualifying otherwise I would have been out of space (too many other shows recorded). god knows what will happen if I have to record all the practices, qualifying, the race and the both gp2 races. It will be using well over half the total box space. maybe time for a 1GB box :)

The footage is high bit rate HD, so it does eat into your hard drive space...however it's great quality and something that currently the BBC will be hard pressed to come anywhere near quality wise

I thought it was funny how Sky didn't go for an advert break while watching the build up to the Qually this morning, then I realised that the BBC are also covering this one live.

Yep. Its the only saving grace at the moment. As long as the BBC still have live coverage Sky wont be able to fill the race with adverts.

Its a strange situation to be in. In order to keep my Sky coverage good, I'm hoping the BBC keep a number of races live and the coverage popular :p:confused:

I've been looking for ways to watch the race live using Sky Go but I can't seem to find it? There only seems to be race control where I'm guessing there won't be any commentary and such?

Do Sky do any live/iplayer esqe streaming or replay of the races? I can only find highlights :D

If you're looking at Race Control then you are probably using the Sky Sports App for iPad? This will have the TV stream live plus other feeds once the programme starts. In that there should also be a Live TV option in the top right corner.

For a mirror of the actual TV broadcast you can also use the Sky GO app which has the F1 channel on it.

sky only put highlights/extended highlights onto sky anytime and non of the practice sessions at all :(

Whats the pre-race build up/Sky's version of the F1 forum like?

Don't have sky atm so I'm wondering if their coverage is actually 'better'.

(I don't care for anything other than qually, the race and the 'F1 forum')

The iPad app has the sessions on before the next session and all the on board and pit stuff is available.

You can go forward and back as well, was very good.

Tbh made the bbc stuff look archaic

So... exactly the same as the BBC then, just for 30 mins longer at the start/end.

I think i'll be keeping my £300...

I am very glad that I've managed to get Sky Go off my dad's account for free, it isn't anywhere near £300 better than last year, I actually think it's slightly worse.

They've pretty much copied the winning formula from last year and added ad breaks. The chemistry between the team doesn't seem as natural as last year either which I'm finding hard to like.

Considering this was their third race together I think they're gelling well. They're also starting to loosen up - the bit with Brundle, Herbert, Hakkinen, Whitmarsh and the ice creams had me laughing :)

I'm happy to be paying the extra £10 a month to watch the races live. If you're not, then don't and STFU moaning about it.

I was really surprised with the Sky setup, they literally sat down and watched the BBC and said, that, but with rubbish presenters. The hype suggested Sky were going to raise the game, with "wall to wall F1" as MB put it. So far it seems like a few hours extra of TV, but mostly the same format as the BBC. I didn't expect a better show, but something different. Yes, the ipad app is good, if you one, the camera angles are also nice, but for family viewing, not needed. The online presence as also been terrible, compared to iplayer the content is tiny for a weekend. I know there are various reasons for the choices in coverage and where it is shown, but it is concerning that Sky are still so focused around TV, not online.

yea the ondemand content on sky anytime using a computer sucks, im assuming its the same for an actual skybox

no practice sessions
only qually highlights
only race highlight/extended highlights
no forum
no pre race build up

pretty **** compared to the bbc iplayer stuff and also no classic races

i hate goergie aswell shes obviously not interested in f1 and comes out with the same stupid 1 liners that can be applied to almost any situation when shes talking about anything f1 related.

we need someone who can use a braincell theres loads of women journalists and ex racing drivers

I must admit that the BBC coverage was significantly better than what ITV used to put out, and I think that SKY coverage is better still, granted its a very very similar format to what the BBC had last year but without the annoying Eddie Jordan.

Anthony Davidson is good and Martin/Ted were the best the BBC had, i like the sky pad and i would like more technical analysis (but that was the same for the BBC)

Yes there are ad breaks but they are usually very short and never during the race - 3,5hrs uninterruped yesterday.

Not particularly fussed on Lazenby but then I was never wholly keen on Humphrey either.

Thompson is a waste of space. Sky should get her off F1 and onto some other sport that I don't watch. I really don't think Davidson needs her on the other side of the Skypad, he knows what he's talking about.

I haven't watched any of the BBC coverage this year yet, apart from a few glimpses.

We've also started watching a few other shows on Sky since I extended Sky into our living room. Prior to this is was just the kids that watched the Sky box. So far more value for money from my point of view, even though it's £10.25 a month plus all the cable and equipment I bought.

Yeah sky only had 3 ad breaks in nearly 4 hours of coverage on sunday so I don't think that can be a point of complaint.

They have copied the BBC in the general format but then that's probably about the only way you can do it. You have to fill some time before the race so you're going to review qually, chat to some drivers/principles, do some news and generally chat about what's to come. I think sky have missed out on filling up there spare time though. They've had a reasonable time to produce some technical items or go behind the scenes more but I think that's missing at the moment apart from one short bit from MB at each race. For instance, Ted's post race analysis above is on youtube but they could drop it in to the schedules somewhere for a 10 minute tv slot.

They also don't really have much of a back catalogue yet to fill the schedules with. The highlights from the first 2 races are on pretty much every day, as are the legends interviews they've done so far with 1 more being added each week to the rotation.

The friday night F1 show is quite good. A nice little preview to the weekend.

Ted, MB, Ant Davidson, Natalie Pinkham and Johnny Herbert are all very good.
Lazenby is quite wooden but getting better and needs to relax a bit and sound a little bit more informed. Georgie Thompson is a total waste of space. Davidson could present the skypad thing on his own perfectly well. She doesn't need to be there at all.

I think they'd also benefit from answering more viewers questions. That's something 5live used to do a lot on the friday practice but I'd skip reading out the names of the tweeters cos they usually have stupid names and it just sounds daft to say here's a question from 'the lord of the sith27' etc!

They need to work on the post race analysis a bit too. They seem to concentrate on getting the soundbites from drivers and team principles when sometimes I'd like more of a review of some of the incidents. The BBC F1 forum is better in that respect. They have a much more relaxed post race mooch about.

On the whole though they're not doing too badly for only 3 races in.
