The Tesla Thread

If you want to give me the extra 50k for the X then sure thing :D

wait for the model Y , it will have 7 seats and meet your capacity concerns. The Model 3 with its sedan shape and not a traditional hatchback will be a tight compromise. Try the space capacity when you go for a test drive

Not saying I won't consider a model y but at earliest it will be is Fall 2020 and starting at $47,000, it's likely to be at least £10k more than the model 3.

I'm not jumping into a model 3 if it doesn't suit the family - but

Yeah i'd be really interested to hear some first hand experience of it, we've only got my daughter who's 9 months old so i think it'd be a struggle with her car seat let alone with the pram but i just want one so damn much!

I coped with a Fiesta ST with two little ones, anything is possible.

Hell I'm driving a KIA Picanto at the moment with 2 kids (6 & 8) and whilst it's tight, we cope.

The Model 3 is a limo in comparison

Test Drive today.....

Very impressed with Tesla shop in Edinburgh - super knowledgeable staff, very pleasant bunch, great with the kids etc. They had a model 3 and a model S in the showroom. Turned up about 15 minutes before my allotted time and they were expecting me and all easy to deal with.

The store is right in the middle of Edinburgh, they park the test cars away and bring them round when it's time. Ended up with a white Performance 3 model, not the standard model I am potentially interested in, but apart from the 20" wheels/dual motors, everything is exactly the same inside/outside.

Chris was my rep and very nice guy, happy to answer any questions I had etc. Very knowledgeable again about the safety aspect, happy to play around with the whoopee cushion to amuse the kids etc

Showed me round the car, boot size and front "boot" size.

Anyway - test drive was about 25/30 minutes - city centre traffic, out a bit further away to a small bypass road (50mph speed limit) - no time to get out on any motorways etc. Had a very quick "poke" in sport mode and it was ridiculously rapid!!!

Driving, so smooth, so simple, felt effortless - screen/console is super clear and very easy to use - everything is done via this (gear stick is the right level on the steering column(D,N,R), indicators on the left)

Space wise - loads in the back, Chris the rep was in the front seat alongside me, my wife, 12 year old son (tall) and 8 year old daughter all sat in the back - because there is no driveshaft/middle column, there is loads of room back there - tons of space. I sat in the back when we returned to the store and no issues with the headroom/legroom etc (6ft 3). Really surprised me. Also with the glass roof, it gives a huge sense of space, my wife loved this.

Very interesting option - made even more interesting by the fact I could potentially buy it via my business (LTD company) - this "appears" to be hugely appealing.

I can write off 100% of the cost of the car in the 1st year

100% First Year Allowance (FYA)
First Year Allowance is claimable for up to 100% of the cost of qualifying low emission and electric cars. By choosing a Tesla car, your business can claim a 100% year one deduction for the cost of the vehicle.

The First Year Allowance is applicable to new vehicles and cars considered new despite previously being used, such as vehicles registered as a sales or service demonstrator by the manufacturer.

In the 2016 UK Budget, the Government announced that 100% FYA for businesses purchasing low emission cars will be extended until April 2021.

Also

Car Fuel Benefit Charge
As electricity is not classed as a road fuel, Tesla cars have no fuel benefit charge. That means employees are exempt from paying benefit-in-kind on electricity provided by their employer to charge an electric company car.

Benefit-in-Kind Tax
All Tesla cars have a benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax of 16 percent, which is the lowest available rate in the UK.

In the 2020/21 tax year, both new and existing Tesla cars will be eligible for a 0 percent BIK rate. The BIK rate will rise to 1 percent in 2021/22 and to 2 percent in 2022/23.

The average petrol or diesel vehicle has a BIK rate of 20 to 37 percent.

So a bit of tax till April but after that 0/1/2% BIK.

Need to speak to my accountant tomorrow about it all to see if there is a downside to it etc.

So in summary - super impressed with the car, business purchase looks very appealing, but need to still find a 2nd car for the wife as both our lease cars are up in Nov/December this year.

I worry that if I get the Tesla, she will want something ridiculous as compensation (Range Rover etc) for me getting the Tesla!!:p:p

2nd picture is the store car (hence the left hand drive) - my car was right hand drive.

Dude, your kids have scary looking faces. They may need to see a doctor about that odd black squiggle that's all over their faces... :O

So I was waiting on an Octopus EV quote for an SR+ M3 and thought I'd call to see how I should start an order. Anyway I was asked what contract I was after PCH or PCP and I said PCP but was told they aren't offering that option. Has that changed recently?

Anyone suggest an alternative to Tesla/Black horse for PCP?

I'm pretty sure only Tesla (via Black Horse) offers PCP on the Model 3. You wouldn't get any "deals" as such on Teslas on a PCP as they don't have dealerships and other variable incentives. So there's no reason not to go direct for a PCP on the Model 3.

Interestingly in Scotland you can apply for a interest free loan of up to £35k for an electric vehicle.

https://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/scotland/grants-loans/electric-vehicle-loan

So £35k over 6 years is £486.11 a month for 72 months.

4 year old tesla is ballpark guess worth around 40/45% say?

So loan outstanding after 4 years would be £11,664. Car is worth at 40% around say £15/£16k......after 4 years.

Another possibility to consider.

Thanks I think I may as well start the process direct with Tesla in that case and get an allocation.

I’ve paid up and just sorting out insurance - collecting my “P-“ tomorrow afternoon, feel like a little child at Christmas! It’s been a long wait

Hi all. Had my order confirmed on the 11th July (LR P+ in grey). Delivery team emailed me last week to say just awaiting to assign a VIN and will then confirm on delivery date. Can anyone enlighten me as to how long after order they received confirmation of the VIN assignment and then how long after that approx for delivery. When I ordered direct from Tesla at Westfield London they said delivery would be in August which seems a bit optimistic based on what I have been reading but I note the Tesla order site is indicating delivery on September for new orders. Any insight would be appreciated.

Really? Had they changed the spec on it themselves? The performance is currently meant to have a nicer interior (Premium plus), better sounds system, bigger brakes, carbon fibre spoiler, better connectivity (Satellite view sat nav, live traffic, Spotify) etc than the standard. This can vary because the models are always changing, but definitely worth checking before you pull the trigger.

A few calls this morning and some clarity on buying personally or via my Ltd.

Buying it outright- I can potentially apply for a Interest free 35k loan funded by Transport Scotland (an agency of the Scottish Government) via the business –

Spoke to a nice lady today who will put together a report confirming the potential savings in fuel over my current car. This will be with me on Thursday. If I wish to proceed, then she will send me an application form to complete for the business. (I can also do this on a personal level but don’t see the benefit over using the business)

So ultimately Standard model is £37,300 in round figures after £3.5k grant. I could fund this via a deposit of some amount and then business interest free loan (35k over 72 months is £486 a month or less depending on deposit ) – she estimates on my mileage of about 10k a year I would save around £150-£200 a month in fuel (personal & business)

Benefits to the business would be the write of 100% in year 1 (as I've bought it outright), if I then sell further down the line, some of that is clawed back into the business as a “profit”. So if I sell after say 4 years and it's worth £15k as a ballpark, that comes back in as a profit but i would pay off the loan with the profit thus negating much of the situation)

Initially a few months of 16% BIK till April 2020 but after that, very little. (0/1/2% for next 3 years)

Telsa qualify as it’s pure electric and my business qualifies as it doesn’t have an cars currently, and also has been trading for more than 1 year (for the loan)

Looks like a no brainer to me.....

how does insurance compare? knowing some of the off-the-line acceleration of the electrics I was wondering if they try and stick it to you?

I think value of the car and repair costs are the main drivers. I'm looking at £500 to £800 annually coming from £180 on my Abarth 595.
