The Tesla Thread

Didn't know the X actually had a third row of seats.

That does beg the question - why would someone who is obviously environmentally sensitive have that many kids that they would need a third row of seats?

Anyone driven the S in the dark? What's the screen like? I feel like it would just be blinding when you're driving in an area with no street lights.

Matt grey is rank as hell. Just looks like the car is awaiting a coat of paint, I don't get it.

But then I don't get matt black either, it's a bitch to keep clean and in good nick and just looks crap apart from the first 15 seconds after it's been washed. Not my cup of tea.

part 2 announcement tonight at 00:00 if I got time conversion right (5pm California), something to do with model 3. not expecting anything to big as no live stream. he earlier said unexected but obvious, what ever that means.

Thanks for tuning in to the Model 3 unveil Part 1! Part 2 is super next level, but that's for later…

@elonmusk The lack of a dashboard/HUD is something that I don't think I could get used to. That's the only thing I don't like about the car.

@BValvsRacing It will make sense after part 2 of the Model 3 unveil.

@HBL_Cosmin Wait until you see the real steering controls and system for the 3. It feels like a spaceship.

heres the blog post apparently according to several news sites.

All Tesla Vehicles Being Produced Now Have Full Self-Driving Hardware

Self-driving vehicles will play a crucial role in improving transportation safety and accelerating the world’s transition to a sustainable future. Full autonomy will enable a Tesla to be substantially safer than a human driver, lower the financial cost of transportation for those who own a car and provide low-cost on-demand mobility for those who do not.

We are excited to announce that, as of today, all Tesla vehicles produced in our factory – including Model 3 – will have the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver. Eight surround cameras provide 360 degree visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range. Twelve updated ultrasonic sensors complement this vision, allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the prior system. A forward-facing radar with*enhanced processing*provides additional data about the world on a redundant wavelength, capable of seeing through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead.

To make sense of all of this data, a new onboard computer with more than 40 times the computing power of the previous generation runs the new Tesla-developed neural net for vision, sonar and radar processing software. Together, this system provides a view of the world that a driver alone cannot access, seeing in every direction simultaneously and on wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses.

Model S and Model X vehicles with this new hardware are already in production, and customers can purchase one today:*
Before activating the features enabled by the new hardware, we will further calibrate the system using millions of miles of real-world driving to ensure significant improvements to safety and convenience. While this is occurring, Teslas with new hardware will temporarily lack certain features currently available on Teslas with first-generation Autopilot hardware, including some standard safety features such as automatic emergency breaking, collision warning, lane holding and active cruise control. As these features are robustly validated we will enable them over-the-air, together with a rapidly expanding set of entirely new features. As always, our over-the-air software updates will keep customers at the forefront of technology and continue to make every Tesla, including those equipped with first-generation Autopilot and earlier cars, more capable over time.

wonder how long it'll take to actually switch it all on, and get it allowed in countries around the world.
"It will take us some time to complete the validation of the software and get regulatory approval but the important thing is that the foundation is laid" for fully autonomous driving, said Tesla CEO Elon Musk on a call with reporters.

more info
On the call about the new hardware, Musk said the hardware is fully capable of “Level 5 autonomy,”

so proper automation, enter address and sit back.

reading between the lines seems like that all new vehicles have equipment in and will be recording data, to help with the software, and if you want to use it, you pay $8000 to enable it.

edit no:inifinity - little details keep being drip fed.
“Our goal is, and I feel pretty good about this goal, that we’ll be able to do a demonstration drive of full autonomy all the way from LA to New York, from home in LA to let’s say dropping you off in Time Square in New York, and then having the car go park itself, by the end of next year (2017)... Without the need for a single touch, including the charger.” -Elon
so that's pretty much confirmation of the autonomous plugging snake charger.

for those who pre ordered, they still have no idea what the dash board will look like.

video u of it self driving is up

My father in law isn't best pleased as his didn't come with it... and be bought the top of the range everything included version.

can sort of undertand, but would he rather they only release new version every year or less, just to make him feel good. its the nature of a fast evolving company/car which is what he should have known before ordering.

wow, that video is...well, very impressive indeed. They've really out in the R&D for this tech and it's clearly paid off. Impressed!!

Surely if multiple Tesla's turned up at that car park at the same time, the software wouldn't be able to cope, as each car would be in some kind of weird mexican standoff?!

I believe they have an algorithm based on the car id to prevent that. Also, Tesla cars can communicate with each other so they'd be able to negotiate who goes first in that scenario.
