The Tesla Thread

We've just been down south for a few days last week and I had the misfortune of going on the m25. Does it always sound like it's going to rattle the car to pieces? I didn't actually get up to 70, but it was pretty unpleasant at lower speeds.

Theres a section of the M25 (think its on the south west side) that made me think my Octavia had a blow out once due to the road noise it made. Was close to brown trouser moment considering I was in lane 3 or 4 at the time.

Ironically the Tesla sounds a bit healthier on that section but not by much.

I did turn sentry mode on the day I got it, maybe that's why. So far, it's about as efficient as my etron  after having some issues years ago, sentry mode is something I very much want on.

:edit: ok, so reading up on it I didn't realise just how much battery sentry mode uses up. I think I will turn it off at home, as I have the house CCTV system I can use.

Either disable sentry at home or have it plugged in at all times. Sentry basically stops it from going into full deep sleep so lots of drain.
The cabin overheat protection can be quite a battery drain as well.
Preconditioning before departure can help as well but not that big a difference with the current weather and needs the car plugged in for maximum benefit.

Lastly, the battery meter is a bit of a guess based on your driving style. The energy app and the consumption chart is much more accurate.

Sentry mode uses 10% per day, I wouldn’t leave it on unless you actually need it on, even if it’s plugged in. You’ll notice that on your power bill.

One thing to check is if you have the camera based detections switched on. Make sure it’s on otherwise it will only trigger recordings when the alarm is. The camera based detections uses the machine vision stuff to record when someone gets very close to or interacts with your car but doesn’t trigger the alarm.

It’s not really a 24/7 dash cam replacement due to the amount of power it consumes and is something they added after the fact when someone suggested it to Elon on twitter and he liked it.

It’s useful but certainly not perfect, if you really want a 24/7 dashcam, go aftermarket.

You probably don’t also need cabin overheat protection. The idea is it stops the cabin reaching X temperature (default is 40c I think) for 12 hours after you last drive the car. If you accidentally left your baby/dog/whatever in the car on a sunny day, they’d be far less likely to come to harm. Dog mode exists now which is much more useful.

Can happen to any manufacturer as it seems they had a bad batch of upper suspension arms and the QC would have been done by the supplier I would have thought. Not sure if the boot leak is related to the rear camera loom but that is also a common warranty fix. Apart from those they haven't exactly been plagued with recalls.
So I got the car back today (they had it 3 working days), they replaced the front suspension arms and said they have resolved the boot leak.

I drove away from the MK service centre, half way up the road I closed the window and noticed it's still rattling and sqeeking from somewhere else now, it's better then it was but something is still not right.

I read the report and they said they had test drive it and all was fixed, well it's not!

Called them up and awaiting a call from the technician apperently, not happy as it's an hour drive to get there

Alas what most people consider an unusual rattle/squeak is somehow considered by Telsa to be "within spec" most of the time.
Ironically for an electric car the Model 3 really isn't all that quiet inside.

I'm also dubious of them test driving it any distance simply because their whole ability to remote start them without your key card or anything when its in for a service is supposed to be geofenced to the service centre so they probably can't actually take it very far.

When I got the car a year ago it didn't make any of this squeaking and rattling. I honestly thought it was the front suspension arms, but now I have heard this more it's now coming from the back, so I assume it was front and back and they just not bothered not look into the rear at all. I got a technician coming out Friday to "road test" it, maybe they don't believe me! I can not be asked to drive it all the way back again and that's what there gonna want me to do.

Just don’t expect much of a handover at collection. The staff are generally helpful and friendly if you have questions and they make sure you have the app downloaded but It is very much a click and collect experience.

It works for some people very in and out, no sales on accessories or insurance etc. Those that expect the sheet pull off, giant bow, a bunch of flowers for their partner and to be shown where the indicators are will be disappointed.

The car will have anything from 25% to 60% charge but there should be a supercharger close by.

They dont even give you a full tank of electric??

I did hear the first charge is free, not confirmed.

Note if you charge on intelligent octopus then 80kW is £6
Thats pretty good to be fair, im really put off by the supercharger prices to charge up, but the cheap Home tariffs are making it more manageable for my budget. I need to read this thread a bit more before I make my mind up on a Model 3 performance.

No, it comes with what it comes with. To be fair, charging the number of cars they deliver per day from a single location takes some serious infrastructure investment.

The first charge isn’t free. If it comes with less than 50% you get a few miles supercharging credit (100 I think). They may not land in your account in time for the drive home!

Have you checked the supercharger prices? They are generally around the 40p mark, that isn't too far off standard leccy

But when its £50+ to charge a car, im really struggling to justify the move to electric?

I think it was a carwow video a few months back when the video showed it cost around £70 to charge one of the new BMW SUV things up. I get he was at a service station, and electric prices are rampant at the moment, but when it costs the same as a Petrol / diesel car I struggle justify the cost of an EV.

For me to be able to afford a £35-£40k car, I really need it to be able to swallow a big chunk of my current fuel cost.

I think if you can't charge at home on a cheap night tarrif (or for free at work), then an ev is pointless imo. I think 40p a khw is about the same as running something like an S3/rs3 in terms of fuel.

Yeah this is my thinking. My 2ltr turbo uses about £160 a month in fuel, so I really need cheap electric to justify the jump.
