The Tesla Thread

Don't worry tesla will replace the front motor for free after 15k miles just like the failing S motors.... interesting RWD only at launch.

Electricity sucking gadgets in a tesla? Dude they don't even have door storage pockets.

The model 3 does though ;) in fact it has loads of storage space, not just inside the car but then you also have the boot and frunk.

Another thing is the interior is so minimalist because once legislation catches up the car is fully autonomous without having a driver in the drivers seat.

Batteries also have an 8 year warranty, although if they are anything like the model S batteries they will be good for well over 20+ years bar any technical faults.

I doubt we will ever have cars driving around with no one in the driving seat, not in our lifetime at least. For the same reason we still have human pilots. Autopilots do go wrong and with millions of cars on the road even a 0.5% failure rate is a lot of accidents. Even cruise control goes wrong sometimes, imagine if you couldn't turn it off.

They are capable of doing it now

No, the key bit of information is right on the Tesla order page:

https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/models/design

"Enabling full self-driving in almost all circumstances".

So it can auto pilot until it can't auto pilot, so that isn't going to wash with the law makers.

But i agree we will see a full certified self driving car without anyone behind the wheel in our lifetime, just not quite yet.

What I find silly about the Teslas, is they are electric powered yet they fill the interior with electricity sucking gadgets. They should have used as many analogue systems as they could to improve the range. Also the giant touch screen looks stupid.

The power usage of vehicle accessory systems in EVs is so low compared to the power required to drive the motor itself that it’s really not worth removing all the tech consumers demand to add a few miles to your range.

Even with the heated seats and steering wheel, climate control and sound system cranked up all the time, accessory usage on my Leaf totals no more than 5% of its total power usage.

I’d rather have the use of all this tech than gain an extra 5 miles on my range; if I really need that extra mileage then I can always turn things off as and when required.

I agree that the big touch screen in Teslas looks ridiculous though.

Will there be an AWD version then? Like the exterior but the interior looks very impractical.

It's very minimalist, I get that but why is it impractical?

Looking at a 3 series dash I can see at least 60 buttons, honestly how often to you press more than 1 or 2 of them while driving? Everything else is set and forget. You could quite easily say it looks cluttered and dated.

I don't think you can legally say that it will work in all circumstances because if the road isn't mapped then the system will not work. If you want to drive it down say a dirt road for instance hence why car's will still have manual controls for a long time. For almost everyone the system will work just fine, that will be enough for lawmakers.

I'm sure with only software updates the model 3 could navigate just fine through country lanes and some dirt tracks using its 8 cameras and sonar/radar, all it needs to understand what it see's and it'll work just fine.

For a vast majority of people though Tesla's current autonomous technology will be more than good enough, I know for me getting up at 4am, just getting in the car for a nice 30 minute power nap while I'm driven to work would be lovely :)

They have a video of it on the model x driving around a US town without any human intervention.

All that is relatively easy, however it is impossible to program the car for every eventuality, remove the driver from behind the wheel and what would the car do if it approached a crossroads with markings covered in mud for example?

The answer to the above problem is to have interconnected vehicles so each knows the others intentions, and we are a LONG way off that, removing the driver from behind the wheel in not something which can happen with the current crop of cars.

Hmm, not a fan... Isn't this supposed to be the cheapo Tesla though, compared to the Model S?

Another thing... I was curious about the way they name their cars and found this:

Musk wanted the first three models to spell "S-E-X" but settled with "S3X" since Ford owns the trademark to "Model E". The next model is planned to be called Model Y so that the models will spell "S3XY"

Lol what

I think this will miss the mark by a fair bit. It's a bit confused as a concept compared to the other Tesla models.

People are only interested in it because it's cheap really, aren't they? I can imagine a lot of the people who've put deposits down finding themselves unhappy with it day to day as it's not as much of a car as the S was but it isn't the electric self driving car of the future yet either. From all the info so far it looks like it'll just be an annoying boring electric car that goes too quickly for most people's needs and is difficult to operate day to day in most of the places it'll be sold.

Lol. So it's cheap / more autonomous than any competitor, electric so cheaper to run, and faster than it's peers, yet all of a sudden this makes it boring / hard to use... simply looks like people oddly have a misguided prejudice against it because it has a Tesla badge on the front.
