The Tesla Thread

Lol. So it's cheap / more autonomous than any competitor, electric so cheaper to run, and faster than it's peers, yet all of a sudden this makes it boring / hard to use... simply looks like people oddly have a misguided prejudice against it because it has a Tesla badge on the front.

I'm not saying it won't sell well - obviously it will. What I'm saying is that as a product it's trying to do to much for too many people and it will quickly be replaced because it won't meet people's expectations in day to day use.

Could they have gotten even more range by making it 0-60 in say 8 seconds with a top speed of 90?

I believe a long range and a fast 0-60 actually go hand in hand when it comes to electric cars. Perhaps someone can confirm.

Car looks like crap but will no doubt sell by the bucketload.
The 5 second 0-60 for 30k will make it the new 335d on Internet forums. Affordable to the masses and spoken about like it can destroy everything else on the road.
As someone else just mentioned the 5 second 0-60 is a quick car given how the other Tesla's have got instant brutal acceleration so it is worrying that average people namely women will be driving a performance car like that with no ability.

It's great when you end your post with a sexist stereotype that totally undermines the validity of the rest of your post.

No they aren't all fast. Tesla made them like that on purpose :)

A Leaf or i3 won't set you pants on fire. Also they will go flat really fast if you gun it everywhere.

Interesting they have also defined an idle fee. 40p a minute if you remain in the bay after charging.

I used our local park and ride the other day there are 3 charging bays available to EV drivers, (one was blocked as it was not working and then there were 2 Nissan Leaf's parked in the remaining bays, not one of them was actually plugged in and charging

Just watched the handover event now:

https://youtu.be/BDQgBsXJnJM

From how it sounds I won't be getting mine until 2019 which isn't really news.

Looks great and seems like they have stuck to all of the earlier announcements. Quite a few mentions of the ramp up in production volumes and some of the issues that may arise etc. All to be expected!

I'm sure with only software updates the model 3 could navigate just fine through country lanes and some dirt tracks using its 8 cameras and sonar/radar, all it needs to understand what it see's and it'll work just fine.

The cameras are great for reading lines not the actual road. Countrylanes is the hardest part to sort auto pilot!

I know what you mean. It's the same with one of the local train stations. Cars left there almost definitely by commuters for the day as far as I can tell. It makes things a bit ridiculous when you are dealing with a small handful of bays!

These seem really short sighted to me. Sticking your speedo away from your eyeline is dangerous.

The R56 model BMW mini moved the speedo to the centre console. So you just had the rev counter behind the steering wheel. Admittedly you can have your speed displayed digitally behind the steering wheel but equally you can use the digital display for another piece of information.

then there's the toyota yaris- those things had a weird display indeed, although i think the idea was it was optically further away, so they were trading the time taken to move your eyes slightly further to it, for the time taken to re-focus.

what it meant in reality though is with my height and preferred seating position i couldn't see the fuel gauge or rev counter without leaning.

there's also the citroen c4 (and i think other models too) that have the speedo up on the dash.

that said, going all touch screen i don't like. sure there's a lot of set and forget buttons you could stick in a touchscreen menu, but there shouldn't be anything you'd want to access on the move (in short aircon and radio controls). trying to operate a touchscreen whilst driving is at least a pain at worst dangerous.

It doesn't really work like that. The motors in an EV scale. Assuming weight, aerodynamics, etc. are the same, an EV capable of 0-60 in under 3 seconds would be able to hit roughly the same efficiency as one with a top speed of 85 and a 0-60 time of 12 seconds.

That's one of the remarkable points of the Model S. It's scary quick. But driven normally, it's more fuel efficient than any Diesel.

Do you drive with your eyes on your speedo all the time? I sure as hell don't. I'm watching the road. Usually gauge my speed by feel.

Good for you.

Sticking your speedo in the middle of the dash with a whole load of distracting information seems daft.

Anything that takes your eyes of the road for longer doesn't seem sensible to me.

It's true though let's be honest it's mainly down to women being smaller and there driving position. Every woman driver I know has there seat right up against the steering wheel to the point there face is nearly touching the windscreen which doesn't allow for correct handling of a car if you need to correct a mistake or spin out.
The majority of women I work with and friends, ex girlfriends etc have all binned there slow and tiny Corsa's, Fiesta's off at some point due to driving ability so I shudder to think what they would do to themselves in a car that hits 60 in 5 seconds!

Got to admit, I'm not to keen on that screen either. I'm intrigued. But I'm not sure it was a great idea.

A small screen behind the wheel with current speed, basic navigation instructions, and remaining range would have been perfect. Plus a few buttons for controlling basic functions.

I can't see it taking too long to get used to it; it helps that the speed is a digital number, a reasonable size, and quite clear. Readable at a glance. I've got a hire car at the moment. It did take me a day or two to adapt back from a digital speedometer back to an analogue one.

I toyed with the idea of putting a deposit down on one when it was first announced. It'd be a perfect local runabout for us but that's it as the nearest city is 150miles away so a return trip on one charge wouldn't be possible.
