Apparently (just learned this with some curious Googling) SAM is a generic feature of Linux since years and more recently Windows, that AMD can theoretically enable on any Zen2 CPU... https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/jk76u9/smart_access_memory_already_works_on_linux_and_is/

Many of these features that AMD and Nvidia are marketing seem to be versions of existing technology wrapped in new marketing speak.

Yep just like RTX is a rebrand just like Gsync is a rebrand - SAM is not unique, it's a rebrand of an existing technique that already exists in other systems. Which is why is not be surprised if Nvidia got it to work on their gpu too - AMD may try to lock SAM to make your buy a ZEN 3 CPU unit you actually don't need it

Apparently the original reposter is wrong? Its all in chinese so people take his word for it, this guys says the chinese next report otherwise

I already said that few pages back, but most ignored it. People could do a bit of deduction like I did without needing to know chinese but that would be too much work for these clickbaity sites lel.

You would still require 5xx chipsets. If it's an open standard there would be something coming on Intel as well.. atleast that's how I read it
Well, obviously they have taken an open standard (which works on Intel) and tailored it for their desired hardware combinations and re-branded it as SAM.

I believe right now only 5xx chipsets support it... will be digging for more info. Am staving off a zen3 itch as ddr5 is just around the corner
Yes, SAM will only work on 5xx and Zen3, that is due to AMD's specific customization and rebranding. However, it appears that the underlying base technology 'Resizable BAR' already exists and works on other chipsets/platforms.

Yup I got that.. the poster talks about MMIO capacity requirement (for addressing 16gb) . So just playing safe as I don't have that data for all platforms.

I expect the next few months will reveal how valuable AMDs SAM really is.

It clearly is more than simply rebranding existing work but is it that much more developed that others can't immediately yoink this advancement for themselves.

I imagine the work AMD is putting in is quite valuable for itself since it makes the components at both ends which is great for guaranteeing a feature works.

Everyone else wanting a bit of this has to go in for cooperating with competitors which is much less attractive. Perhaps no one but AMD could have brought this tech forward.

Lol. Your sounding like your waking up to the greed tactics of nvidia finally grim old bean.

With how they u-turned on supporting 450 chipsets not long ago, maybe they can offer people on Zen something after the marketing hype has calmed?

If they just use the 5950x, assuming it is indeed the fastest cpu, then they can just disable SAM for a second run. They'd also have to re test all the Nvidia cards using the 5950x too for a fair comparison and not reuse the older results.

I'm sure they'll be doing this as most will have reviewed the 5000 CPU's before the Radeons are released, and they'll always use the fastest cards available which are currently the 3000 series.

Its about time these reviewers has a dedicated AMD test rig anyway. They cant always assume - well we are going with the top intel DIY cpu in our build because.. reasons. Quite a lot of people own Ryzen's now so it should be straight forward to have both systems for some of the testing for when its needed. Its not like some of these Tubers have to pay for the hardware, its generally sent to them to use.

Hopefully going forward with Zen 5XXX they will have AMD Test bench.

However it's entirely reasonable that they haven't up til now considering Intel still had the edge in gaming. You can't bench GPU's on the "lesser" platform (And I mean entirely in gaming related loads here).

Hardware Unboxed use a Ryzen 3950x for all testing now and have done for some time.
