The "Top Gear", Season 24/25/26 thread

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse apart from the 15min on the hot hatches the rest was pure trash.
Funny, not being a car person, I was the opposite.

Found the racing segment really interesting but way too rushed, could have served perfectly as a mini TG spin off series focusing more on the selection and training over the various weeks.
Agreed, it might have been fun to watch the selection process. It could easily be a 3 or 4 episode spin off, showing their progression during training too.

The motorsport part was good, I would happily watch a longer, more in depth series.

Hot hatches are naff TBH ;)
Thanks for the insight.

Well yes, it was, but it was all about the remade Peugeot 205, I was expecting (having read this thread) a bit more than a brief shot of the Astra GTE’s nose parked in the line, they had some epic cars there but didn’t mention any of the others.

I can run what we post about before you if your prefer?

Yes it annoyed me too, and the fact they never mentioned the GTE, MK1 Focus RS and 182 Clio.
Nor the R5 GTT, Renault 5 Turbo or the 306 Rallye/GTi6, I guess the latter especially doesn't normally get mentioned in top hatchback lists but that doesn't stop it being one IMO.

Saxo/106 as well but I guess they're covered by the Ax as they were just revisions of it.

Did they have an Escort RS in the lineup?

Wasn't this place obsessed with the screw mod at one point?

They had a Focus RS but strangely not an Escort RS Turbo which was of the same ear as the 205 and Astra certainly.

Re: Hot hatches - It was only a short hatch hot hatch history summary to introduce the updated 205.
It was never intended to be an in-depth analysis on every hot hatch there ever was ! :p

Never driven one, just a car I never had any urge to own or drive :)
My point exactly. It's like saying I dislike chicken but I've never eaten it. You can't comment on something you haven't tried because you have absolutely no idea what it's about.

I owned a Clio 182 cup in the past and it was one of the most fun I've ever had in a car. Round the A and B roads it was something else. I've owned a fair few hot hatches and that car was well up there.

cavalier sri, also with red top, was pretty much the reps company car at the time , apparently just 1100kg, only 200 more than the 205 he quoted ... before the germans came.
(dept head had senator 24V,)

when will have materials to build modern/safer cars with similar weights/nimblenress.

I had a mate who owned a pretty rapid Evo 3 at the time and when he took me out in it he told me he missed his Golf’s. When I said why would you miss a Golf when you’ve got this, he said because the Golf’s you could rag to an inch of its life and have fun. The Evo was so quick it just scared him without even pushing it. That’s the beauty of a hot hatch, driving it on its limit through the twisties in a legal manner of course. :D

Had Golfs too and yeah they are good fun but nothing on that Clio I had, constantly on the red line and up on 3 wheels round the roundabouts was stupidly fun.

There is a few cars I wish I brought back when they were sensible money. Clio would be one Civic Type R (EK9 preferably) would be another and always wanted own a Pug 205, my mate had a lush Miami Blue Gti that I really loved. Too late now prices are silly for most of the decent ones.
