The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

Thats a no brainer, get the 20mm.

Yup I'd agree. It is the lens that is almost always on my camera. Takes superb pics and I love the portraits I get out of it. I prefer them to the 45mm as well, despite that being probably closer to the typical focal length.

The slow focus is a downside but you can't expect everything at that price. It was a great buy when it first came out at the higher prices and is a bargain now.

I loved the images from my 20mm, but the AF was sluggish, manual focus even worse and it banded at high ISOs on my E-M5 so had to go. If they'd done a proper refresh that fixed the above instead of just a cosmetic one I'd have bought another one right away.

Bit of advice guys if you're willing to share.

Currently I have the olly 25mm prime in 1.8 aperture. Do like this lens just want something that has a bit more of a field of view for that extra bit of space when shooting things around cities/towns/cars etc. Also enjoy landscapes when the opportunity arises!

I'm a bit confused over whether I want the 12mm f2.0 or the 17mm f1.8 as I dont know which will be better in terms of street/architectural shooting. I have in the past rented the 12-40mm pro lens at f2.8 and found this to be very good indeed, albeit on the large side of things to which the primes win every time in regards to size. How come no-one mentions the 12-40mm, is it considered too expensive or bit to be practical in the u43 grand scheme of things?

If you had to pick from the 17mm or the 12mm which would you prefer, and why?

Phate, have you gone down this route before, i.e choosing the 17mm and 25mm then having the 9-18 for landscapes? I'm assuming the f range on the 9-18 doesn't really matter due to things not moving very fast in scenary shots hence not needing a very fast lens (unless it is approaching dusk lets say). Would you ever use your 9-18 for street stuff if you wanted to fit a large building in for example, is that practical?

advice welcome chaps!

Just to throw a bit of a spanner in the works, there's also the Panasonic 15mm f/1.7 (I think) for a fast wide-ish prime.

Right now I'm really smitten with the Ricoh GR (don't have one, but want one). I think you can even get one for under the price of the 12mm, and of course you get an APS-C sensor in a small pocketable package. For a street photography camera, I'd personally rather have a GR.

Dumb q, what makes a lens wider?

Tempted by the 20mm for its smaller form, taking pictures on snowboard holidays Also for some pictures on holiday. (pictures of Mrs, scenery etc). 90% Most my current pictures are of my dog!

(currently only have the zoom lenses 14-42 and 50 to 150mm provided with the Olympus E-PL5)

check this out, all to do with the distance the image is focused to as a point on the sensor from the lens.

I think!

Ah that confirms what I thought.

Would a 20mm prime have the "fish eye" effect similar to a gopro? I know they're wide angle but not sure how wide.

Just seen the £120 off isn't off the 20mm Panasonic prime lens and only for the 9 to 18mm zoom.

Is there likely to be any sales/good times of year to get a 20mm prime lens? I assume this will be better for me than 9 to 18mm as opens up low light shooting, small form and bokeh, rather than just the UWA. A bit scared of buying a £270 prime lens when all the rest of my kit cost less than that!

Hey mate, sorry for the delay on this one. The other day o wrote out a long decent reply, then my browser crashed and I stormed off in a strop, shortly realising I never rewrote it :p

Anyway, my decisions RE lenses are based on what I know I like in FF terms and my Canon range so therefore I effectively replicated it to m43 (I speak in past tense, I'm yet to actually buy the lenses) but here's how I broke it down

Currently my Canon range is:

17-40mm
24-70mm
35mm
85mm
135mm

Each has their own merits and traits which I love, the 24-70 is my wedding workhorse along with the primes, the 17-40 is landscapes

So here's the lenses I've settled on (fortunately selling the majority of the above more than pays for below)

Rokinon 8mm fisheye - I'm a scuba diver. It seems wrong not to have a fisheye :p
Oly 9-18 for landscape and underwater wide angles
Oly 17mm - so the 35mm, one of my favourite primes
Oly 40mm - good for portraits
Oly 60mm macro - the 135mm struggles to take a bad photo, its a dreamy focal length and I would miss it. Plus I want to try underwater macro work.

The only lens in keeping from Canon is the 35L, I cannot bring myself to part with it. I'm tempted to get the 12mm as well, but then again I am a bit of a glass whore :p

Hope that helps.
Jake

nice choices
60mm is the stand out one wish owned that but use my 40-150mm for most macro shots, although i own the oly 75mm which is a special lens id take it over the 60mm for dreamy and would be near equal to your canon 135mm ,the oly 9-18mm is good at the wide end and you can use filters unlike the 7-14mm ,i owned the 17mm but swapped out for the 15mm leica which is equal almost but loses out on snap ring focus but gains a aperture dial and a little wider ,think you mean 45mm not 40mm which there are 3 choices now uber expensive nocticron ,the new panasonic and the oly .the oly is best value if you own olympus cameras.

I really bloody wish they'd make a ~100mm macro. My old 150mm Sigma is the only lens I truly miss from my Nikon days. I keep almost buying the 60mm but fear it'd be too short for my uses.

After one hell of a lot of ummin' and arring I finally said sod it and bought the 12-40mm Olympus p f2.8 pro lens!

Decided with the 12-40 f2.8 instead of the 12mm f2.0 for the following reasons:
Versatility
Build quality (it really does feel like a quality product, then again I’ve never handled a 12mm but I imagine it to be the same!)
Cost

I also own the 25mm f1.8 prime Olympus lens but herein lied the problem in my opinion. Whilst I loved the 25mm, buying the 12mm would mean carrying two lenses, plus at £450+ on ebay for oem lenses it worked out more expensive as I would need to keep the 25mm prime. So now I have the 12-40mm I will sell the 25mm and in theory with discount this lens should only cost me circa £380 ish.

I don’t know if I’m going to miss the f2.0 of the 12mm for indoor shooting, I suppose I will never know as I haven’t physically tried it, and will only be going on what I achieve with the 12-40mm. I hired the lens for a trip to Ireland while yes, it is on the large size it is a very, very good lens plus it has all the benefits of the pro line in being shock, dust and splash proof. Eventually I would like to sell my Pen E-P5 and move to the OM D M1 for the view finder, grip, extended battery and also never having the worry about shooting in the rain!

So some pictures of the glassssssss…..

And here are some pictures next to the 25mm prime, which makes it look tiny, shot on my htc one m8 which really doesn’t have the greatest camera!

If I don’t get on with the size, I think the lens’ hold around 80% of their value when comparing to popular auction sites for example, so will consider it like a long lease if I decide to sell and move to the 12mm instead, but I have to decide fully before considering selling the 25mm otherwise I’ll be down 2 lens’ without enough cash to get both again!

good choice i think from user reviews the 12mm end of the 12-40mm is better than the prime 12mm sharpness and detail ,
but you sacrifice f2 for 2.8 and size difference
