The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

I'll get my other planned lenses first and see how I'm doing for space and weight and will go from there. :)

Was a guest at a wedding a few weeks ago and took some extra shots purely as a favour with my 12-40mm during the day, and night.

Daytime shots were great when they were composed correctly, however come night time and lack of flash the 12-40 just wasn't fast enough at f2.8, the majority of the evening was on a terrace so lighting wasn't terrible but adequate for a faster lens.

Something like that 25mm f0.95 would be ideal in those circumstances , should be fast enough to help images not be blurry whilst not having the harshness of the flash, in my opinion anyway!

Manual focus could be a bit of a problem though unless you're really quick!

Likewise.

I have enough trouble with framing to start worrying about focusing as well.

It's not the framing. Unless for a very specific job I've never ever needed MF. I appreciate people who do it and the effort/skill involved. But I see it as mostly pointless these days.

They've removed the AF to make the lens smaller, is my guess anyway.

Put in a Bespoke Offers pricebeat against Amazon via quidco. Some risk in whether or not the cashback goes through but should net you about a 20% saving if it works.

Or similar money via HDEW if you'd rather gamble on 3rd party warranty over cashback.

Even then its still not as cheap as I've found it elsewhere.

Absolute best price I've found is £1009 for the combo.

Annoyingly a month ago it was £900.

I'd buy second hand if I find one as well.

Thats not a bad price at all. Most places have the 12-40 new at £600 upwards. Even 2nd hand the lens goes for £450 to £500 which would mean your body was only around £500 which is also cheap for a Mk2 5.

In fact, apart from my bargain mk2 i managed to nab from the bay, they tend to go for £500 2nd hand.

I suspect unless you are lucky a body and lens is going to cost you £950 to £1000 from ebay anyway. At that price difference i'd just buy new.

Warranty with them only though. AFAIK olympus Europe does not honour warranty for its stuff bought from Asia plus there is also the import vat/duty lottery to factor in.

I was tempted myself to just order new from HK but those things put me off.

Hmmm even though, how often have you sent back a camera body or lens in the first year of having it?

I've sent back 1 lens once since 2006.

True! I probably would have ended up taking the risk and ordering one for the price savings if I hadnt have spotted that 2nd hand bargain (which might turn out not to be)
