The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

Where did you get the extension tubes from please? Been thinking about them myself on the 45mm as its so sharp and not a bad length to make it a macro lens(ish)

FOTGA AF Automatic Macro Extension Tube for Olympus Panasonic Micro Four Thirds M4/3

These ones have metal fittings unlike some cheaper ones... also seen reviews and seem good.

I got the macro close up lens free with my 40-150 lens. It's pretty good on that zoom, useless on the 14-42 zoom (it makes the focal distance one centimetre closer from 20cm to 19cm so barely any difference in the close up). At 150 on the big zoom makes a massive difference of 10cm. Not tried it yet on the 45mm as only just read yesterday that it fits that lens too.

Not holding out much hope though as from reviews it's not that powerful only +2 or +3 from memory.

Found a website with a calc app yesterday and plugged in the info on the lens and to get it to 1:1 it would need +17!

Suppose that's the issue with all these lens, they were never made to be macro and have too long a minimum focus distance to start with.

Apparently my new 12-40 pro zoom should give me bigger magnification than the 45mm with the close up lens. Well test tonight.

I'm thinking a few extension tubes will be better.

yeah will be interesting to see how they go... one down side is the depth of field will get so shallow with tubes you have to stop down quite some way so light will become a problem without a ring flash.... but I guess with 45 you at least have f1.8 as a good start point.

I'm just a tight wad and don't want to splash out on the 60mm macro :)

Hmm metal mounts but sadly quite a few reviews on there showing the contacts didn't work and had to get another set. Whereas the Meke plastic ones don't have one bad review.

Decisions decisions.

Well I tried them out... all ok. With both rings fitted the focal range is tiny. With small one only I can get to about I guess 15-20cm... which is a improvement over stock 50cm.

Will I use them... not sure. I'll post up a photo later

It's dam tough focusing when so close in though as the slightest move from yourself throws it straight out

I can imagine the focusing gets really tight. I saw on one review using both together on the 45mm lens gets the focal distance to 1 cm!

Don't think it will go that close. Maybe 10cm with both

They are deffo no replacement for dedicated macro lens though...takes a ton of patience to get good focus

Yeah there is good reason a good macro lens costs a packet. Same with the close up lens kits you can buy for £20 to £30. In reading reviews of them most make the edges of the picture out of focus badly and lots suffer from CA and other issues.

But for £20 I suppose you cant go too badly wrong so long as you have the patience :P

For the first time in bloody ages I managed to bully myself into getting out with my camera. And it was crap :p

Crap light, crap skies and to cap it off I left the camera in crappy jpeg mode! That said, I'm somewhat surprised as to how OK the files are. This was shot in the pitch black (pretty much guessed at focus point and composition!) and has only had a little desaturate, slight shadow lift and crop. The jpeg sharpening is a little harsh up close but otherwise fairly useable for smallish prints.

Claims to be but actually a Hong Kong dealer. Was concerned I might get stung by vat and duty but came hassle free and did indeed show on tracking it came from a uk.

Will look at getting some more lenses from them

If anyone has bought the 26mm of extension tubes, if you put them both on the 40-150mm lens @ 150mm you get focus range of about 80cm to 1.8m from object and really nice macro'ish shots.

Also don't have the problem with the silly shallow depth of field when using with prime so you can get a decent amount of object in focus...

Light might be a problem, but I think you can shoot like this hand held for insects etc

I do love the 45mm lens. In fact I love all the Olympus prime lens.

Next one is going to be the 75mm one I think. Awkward focal length but after ready all the reviews about just how much detail and tack sharp it is even fully open I want one lol.

Turning out quite expensive now. Thought it was going to be cheap this dark side thing. Already I own 4 lenses and a marco close up lens lmao.
