The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

If anyone has bought the 26mm of extension tubes, if you put them both on the 40-150mm lens @ 150mm you get focus range of about 80cm to 1.8m from object and really nice macro'ish shots.

Also don't have the problem with the silly shallow depth of field when using with prime so you can get a decent amount of object in focus...

Light might be a problem, but I think you can shoot like this hand held for insects etc

That lens already has a min focus distance of 90cm without the tubes. You sure it's not much less?

I just tried again and it seems I'm rubbish at measuring with eye :)

Without tubes looks around 90cm, with.... maybe half that distance (I'm sure there is some mathematical formula that can be used)

There is, there are many a site with calcs.

The version 2 of the 40-150 only has a 50cm minimum focus to begin with btw. The older model was 90cm.

So the old lens should give you a 0.54x magnification at 39.5cm with both tubes from 0.22x standard and the new mark 2 will give you 0.77x at 20.3cm minimum focus.

I have the olympus macro close up lens which i got free with my 40-150 lens. Will be interesting to see if i can use it with the extension tubes. In theory I should have greater than 1.0x magnification and a very short min focusing distance.

First attempt at focus stacking using Gsimple release app on my gx8 with 15mm pana leica with helicon focus ,although i do not know how to use either correctly came out ok
the depth map option looked weird and i will have to watch you tube videos for finer points ,so if panasonic users are worrying that the olympus updates with focus stacking will be an edge not to worry it can be done ,

Finally succumbed to the 60mm macro. Should be here next week, grey import but posted from within the UK and at £229 I couldn't resist.

No ,extremely poisonous,
Think the effect would be better with a dedicated macro lens still I don't know of a macro lens that uses f1.7 but my 15mm does focus fairly close to subjects ,

Yeah that's who I got my 25mm from for £165. Came in two days. Brand new as described. Can't fault them

I've read some pretty mixed reports about their private warranty service, but I've never yet had to make a warranty claim on any photographic equipment so fingers crossed!

Hi,

My friend has a Panasonic DMC-G5 and would like to get into macro photography. Which macro lens would you recommend for the µ43 system. It seems the Panasonic options are very limited so I guessing one of the olympus lenses is the way to go. Budget around £300, would consider second hand if there is a reliable place in which to get them.

Thanks.

The Olympus 60mm f2.8 seems to be universally praised over on DP Review.

The only issue is that it won't be stabilised on a G5 as that body doesn't have IBIS.

The Panasonic 30mm f2.8 does have OIS and is generally considered a good starter macro lens, but the shorter FL mean you have to be closer to your subject and possibly causing shadows.

Both can be had new from established UK retailers for around the £300 mark.

Anyone know what the max Sd card size is for the Olympus E-PL5?

Considering a 128gb micro Sd that I can then swap in/out of my surface tablet

Well after spending Saturday night in pouring rain in Durham. I can say I am very impressed with the Mk2 EM5.

It held up to the water and I grabbed a half decent video

Most of the stills of the attractions were taken hand held at 0.75s or slower even though I was using f2.8 and 1600 ISO. Amazed out of 200 shots I got over 50 usuable ones. The image stabilising is magic I tell you!

The above video was shot at 40mm and hand holder the camera in front of me.

What is it you are filming?
I see whales, but are they on some sort of projection?

Yeah they have an annual light show in Durham. Its a 3d holographic protection onto water droplets over the river. Quite impressive really.

I have just purchased a 60mm macro lens on ebay using dwi i notice king for a day used the same ebay seller ,did you receive your item ok ,and did you wait long for it ,getting ready for the olympus 4.0 firmware update.
