mines only leaked when ive put it inside a plastic bag, kept it in my pocket as i normally would and never leaked strangely enough.

Right I've decided I'm going to go all in with vaping now and finally kick the habit. I want to learn how to make my own coils and how to wick them properly. I guess for getting started I have a budget of around £200 for all the kit and equipment I need. I want something that is really good for flavour and that will help me kick the smoking habit.

I currently use a Smok Alien 220W (I think it is 220W at least, might be 250W but I never use it at those temperatures anyway so it doesn't really matter) with a TFV8 Baby Beast and the flavour just sucks which is why I want to get some really high end kit. I absolutely need to give up smoking so this is really important to me.

I've looked on Fast Tech and they seem to supply everything that I need. I'm just not sure if I am missing anything. Are there any websites with a list of all the equipment you need to get started making your own coils and wicking them? Sorry for the newbie question but I'm really keen on getting started on this.

If you have a suggestion for any websites or YouTube tutorials on how to get started and how to decide what mod and tank or RDA I need and maybe something that explains what everything means for newbies that would be awesome :).

You don't need really high-end kit to be satisfied. I have some very expensive kit but I keep going back to the little Digivape Siren on a VTC Mini. Less than £50 right there. It all about getting the right kit rather than the best kit.

So, if you are wanting to build your own coils then I can highly recommend the OBS Engine Nano. Super-easy to build on and the flavour is excellent. Get yourself a Coilmaster coiling kit from FT or wherever. That will get you a build tester, tweezers, and a coiling jig. For cotton, buy a block of Muji cotton pads from Muji. £5 will buy you enough for a lifetime. And for wire, grab some from http://www.wireandstuff.co.uk I can highly recommend the 26/32 clapton SS316 stuff as it works in both power and TC modes and will give you a good resistance for a sensible sized coil (0.5 Ohms single coil, 6 wraps, 3mm diameter).

Keep the Smok device until it dies unless you fancy a change, in which case get a DNA75C device (if you don't vape over 75W) such as the Therion-C. If you can't stretch to one of them then grab a Smoant Charon. Well built and cheap.

EDIT: +1 on the Smoant Charon. Been my every day mod now for a good month or two. Cannot fault it. Brilliant device.

+1 For the coil master kit. The kit I ordered from amazon had free Japanese organic cotton included. together with an RDA clone from ft for around £6, you'll have everything you need.

I still have a bit of trouble getting my coils to match properly, so I don't know if a single coil RDA would be a good place to start?

Awesome. Thanks. I'll keep hold of the stuff I already have in case there is an emergency and I need to vape and the other stuff isn't ready. I'll make sure to pick up some cotton and the wire from those places.

The Serpent Mini SMM looks good and you are the second person who has recommended it to me so I think I'll go with that. The coiling kit also looks good. Thanks.

I think I might as well get a new mod to go with the new RDA. What do I want? A TC mod or something else? Does the 26/32 clapton SS316 work in the Serpent Mini SMM? If so I'll pick up some of that.

Edit: Just noticed you can get some pre-made coils as well. That might be a good idea to start off with while I practice making my own coils. If I get 10 or 20 pre-made coils that should last while I do the research and figure it all out myself.

I've been using the SMM Serpent Mini for a couple weeks now and again I cannot fault it. You need to get the wicking correct but after that the flavour is spot on imo. Very very easy to build too.

I'm not a fan of Stainless Steel wire, I stick with Kanthal. Nor am I a fan of Temp Control. Kanthal & SS will work in the tank with no issues, however you will need SS if you want to use Temp Control.

Mod wise, I highly recommend the Smoant Charon - https://www.fasttech.com/products/3032/10022491/7361403

OK bought the Serpent Mini SMM, Coiling kit and and the Smoant Charon Mod. Now just to pick up some wire and some cotton. Thanks everyone I really appreciate the help.

Bought a Serpent before from FT and didn't pay any tax but the order was under £18, is there any import tax/VAT to pay on top as it's over £30?

Nope. I've done £100+ orders before and never had to pay any tax/import fees etc. They mark the packages as gifts of low value.

Good because I forgot about taxes / import duty when I made my order :).

Edit: Ordered 10 metres of wire, 2 batteries and lots of cotton. Hopefully that should last me a long time.

I was just wondering though how long a coil lasts if you build it yourself? Should I be looking to change the coil once a week or should I do more or less often? Also how often do you need to rewick the coil?

Sorry for the stupid questions. Just trying to figure everything out.

Also looking for a really trustworthy site to buy all my e-liquid from. So far I've been getting all of my e-liquid from Vape Mail but I'd like to get some premium stuff as well just for enjoyment. I'd really prefer to buy all my e-liquid from one source rather than having multiple accounts on different websites.

Also when I bought my Smok Alien I got some e-liquid from the shop at the same time. I guess it is a few months old by now. Do you think e-liquid goes off or do you think it'll be fine to vape in my new kit when it arrives? I have some quite nice liquids that I would like to finish off.

Grrr had 2 mods die over the weekend a Predator 228 and a Smok H-Priv 220. Managed to get a Smok Alien mod today lets see how long this will last.

2x24 wrapped in 32 all 316L (3 coils) 3ml ID ohm out @ 0.1

You have to rake out the cotton tails heaps with the Tri coil deck, have the tails just poking out of the chamber too. Found 2.5mm coils kinder for wicking with 3 coils.

Also make sure everything is nice and tight, you may have a hot leg from a poor connection, the provided grub screws on the Tri deck are absolute garbage.
