You can't stop an addiction by swapping the delivery medium.

As others have said, you absolutely can -- and e-cigs are a prime example. Start where you're comfortable, and gradually ramp down the nicotine content until you're vaping nic-free juice. At that point, you're no longer dependent on nicotine whatsoever.

That's also to do a disservice to the actual benefits of wanting to stop smoking anyway. Sure, if you decide not to stop entirely you can still be addicted to nicotine, but surely moving to a much safer delivery than tobacco is a positive step.

When people ask for help to stop smoking, they aren't necessarily asking for assistance in eliminating nicotine from their lives. Big difference.

I now people who have been using e-cigs for years....

you either have the will power of you don't changing the delivery system does nothing without will power so don't kid yourself

Maybe not, but these must be a lot better for you then real cigarettes. I wish that all cigarettes were completely banned and then every smoker would have to switch to these. Seems like a much better way of getting your nicotine fix and better for everyone else around.

EDIT: Oops didnt see the date of op. Well done! My Dad has tried to quit with these but just doesnt seem to have the will power and goes back to smoking. My sister has stopped smoking but is now reliant on the e-cigs. Its good to know they can use them to quit if they put their minds to it.

Point missed.

They may have been using an e-cig for years, but they're no longer smoking. Hence, they have successfully quit smoking.

Quitting smoking, and giving up nicotine aren't the same thing. Saying not to bother if all you're going to do is move to a safer alternative is like telling someone who has been smacking themselves in the head with a brick for the past 20 minutes not to bother switching to that rubber mallet if they're not going to stop completely. It makes no sense.

The real test comes when their e-cig fails or they run out of juice, though. Either you suck it up (in another sense) or end up with a fag in your mouth. :D

This neatly sums up my opinion on this. I tried quitting smoking many times throughout the 13 years I smoked and failed. So the whole cold turkey thing didn't work for me (I got horrible panic attacks and couldn't cope), but I haven't smoked in the last 2 years because I now use ecigs. That works nicely for me since nicotine itself is far less harmful than the ingredients of a cigarette. I don't smoke anymore, although I'm still a nicotine addict. I have nicotine in abundance, so that suits me down to the ground.

There seems to be some stigma attached to nicotine addiction that isn't applied to caffeine addicts or other reasonably harmless drugs. no one tells people that switching to decaf is pointless.

If e cigs help you reduce the harm smoking is causing you then that's a positive thing. It also provides a way to reduce your nicotine intake while still simulating smoking, if that's what you want.

I was just about to start/search for an e-cig thread and funnily enough this was at the top!

4 months for me now, just started mixing, and loving it.

Now to find the e-cig thread.

I've quit smoking for 3 days now and its been easy thanks to my e lites ciggy :) although looking through this thread and seeing what flavour fluids you can get makes me really want to try a proper vaper cig.

What would you guys recommend for a decent starter kit? Only want to spend around £30 and I'd like to keep the cig low maintenance if possible.

Try the VH Star kit here

All you need then is some liquid to go in and you're done. Those batteries are compatible with the vast majority of atomisers out there so when the ones that come with it wear out (usually under a month's use) you can try out other atomisers (they only cost a few quid at most). I'm a big fan of these

As far as choosing your liquid goes, get small 10ml bottles at first, because some of them might not be to your taste.

Saw this on groupon

How do they compare to VH Star Kit?

Go with the Devrij's recommendation.

Or I use these and they work great:

EDIT - In fact, if I am not mistaken the kit I pointed out comes with rebuildable clearomiser so all you have to do when it burns out is buy the elements that cost £5 for three so works out cheaper in the long run.
