Poll: The Vega Review Thread.

What do we think about Vega?

  • What has AMD been doing for the past 1-2 years?

  • It consumes how many watts and is how loud!!!

  • It is not that bad.

  • Want to buy but put off by pricing and warranty.

  • I will be buying one for sure (I own a Freesync monitor so have little choice).

  • Better red than dead.

There is info going around that Tiled rasterisation is not fully working yet and not best optimised in applications where it is working.

The rasterisation program shows that it is not working by default for everything at the moment as it is still just rendering no different to Fiji.

True, does not stop us children from being disappointed though :p;)

:p

So if I release a product I price it according to the RRP my competitor set for their product 1.5 years ago?

No, I price according to the market today. That's the only relevant discussion.

Some of the damage control in this thread is reaching unprecedented levels.

So don't buy it yet or at all? It's not that difficult, I'm not, others aren't. Why should another company have to do the consumers dirty work.

Anyway it seems to be slap bang in the middle of gtx1080 pricing at £550.

The free games thing i would barely even consider a pack as its not unusual to get free games with a card. Do these come with money off ryzen cpu's etc? Doesn't look like it. The pack in america was money off a freesync panel, money off a motherboard and ryzen cpu. But over here that's somehow been diluted to 2 games and a middle finger with a higher pricing.

And if you look at the listings of the cards on ocuk it just mentions free games in a "black pack", so paying more for not even remotely the same deal.
That's why I wrote "pack" :) The discounts seem to have been dropped in the UK. I checked another retailer and it's the same as OCuk - card + 2 "free" games.

Just seems to be normal that we don't get the same offers as the US.

I'd accept that if the cards had been priced the same, but now its getting bent over on the price, and also not getting the options the Americans do. Seems tech companies think that everywhere outside of the U.S. is there just to inflate their wallets.

Exactly. They seem very well built and look great. For the premium one is paying, I expect minimum 3 years warranty. The 2 year warranty sends out all the wrong signals to me and is a complete put off.

2 years warranty in their current situation make sense somewhat, because of miners.... Let's say that they can't really reduce the warrant to 6 months, 1 year is to little to give AMD any credibility (and I also think that 2 years warranty is minimum on electronic products in EU isn't it ? might be different in the UK though ?), 2 years seems to look like what they can get away with to reduce the miner RMAs a little.... That's the way I see it anyways. But yeah sure it sucks for the consumer...

To offset the price AMD should have just offered Wolfenstein and Prey for free.

With that in the bag, the current prices wouldn't be as bad.

The games are free with the $599 pack version, the version that's now been sold here for £549

The single card is $499 and is now sold out.

Gigabyte are offering 3 years it seems. But OcUK do not have those in stock yet.

I read over on Guru some things were not working, and that AMD had tweeted about not putting the driver up yesterday (August 7th one that is up is old), as they found bugs at the last minute, but would get it up as soon as.

Another **** up by the sounds of it from AMD, who'd have thought it :p

Would make all the reviews invalid, and everyone whos managed to get one, hasn't got a fully working card.

Havn't seen the tweet myself though, so can't verify.

Interesting so have the reviewers been using an old driver then ? and was there suppose to be a launch driver on the 14th ..

Well the official launch is H1 2017, but behind closed doors, AMD intend to have drivers ready by end of the year :p

We ave been through this rubbish before, give it a rest.

I only watched bitwit's video, but it would seem to me if we ignore power and heat so only care about performance, then I would say the rx vega 56 did quite good and if is actually cheaper than a 1070 on actual prices would seem a good buy, but because the gap between the 1070 and 1080 is huge compared to the gap between vega 56 and 64, the 64 doesnt seem a great buy.

Thats my view anyway. :)

The problem is I would be surprised if the prices actually match RRP.

I have always felt nvidia deliberately gimped the 1070 a bit extra this generation because the 970 was way more popular than the 980 last generation.

Apparently the US price is still $499, and £549 is in fact a <1:1 conversion from USD to £.

So US RRP = $499 still
UK RRP is (always was) £549, and OcUK had permission to sell a limited number < RRP.

The plot thickens...

e: Basically we are the new Australia, and we're just being asked to pay more.

different ways of doing business, you can see this if you compare the dragons den a uk show to shark tank a us show.

In america they believe in selling in highest quantities possible with lower margins.
In the uk its always about maximising the profit margin, which may or may not have a hit on quantity sold.

Worryingly there also seems to be a new trend of keeping stocks low on technical goods, as this serves not only to reduce risk of unsold stock but to generate demand as people tend to want something more thats in short supply.

By the way, why is there no vega 56 on ocuk?

The gap between custom 1070s and reference 1080s isn't so great.

AMD have gimped Vega 56, they've BIOS limited it to 300W. In truth that isn't a bad thing :p
