Poll: The Vega Review Thread.

What do we think about Vega?

  • What has AMD been doing for the past 1-2 years?

  • It consumes how many watts and is how loud!!!

  • It is not that bad.

  • Want to buy but put off by pricing and warranty.

  • I will be buying one for sure (I own a Freesync monitor so have little choice).

  • Better red than dead.

RRP is recommended retail price. Retailers are not beholden to it. It reads that AMD went some way to guarantee that retailers would price at the RRP. Retailers now appear to have increased prices due to demand for remaining standalone cards. Otherwise the 'bundle pack' cards are what are left.

Trouble is the RRP is no longer $499, it's now $599 for the 64 Blower edition until AMD realise they've overpriced at $599, every Vega 64 will be $599.

It also doesn't bode well for AiB partners who normally come in above stock RRP prices due to the extra fancy coolers etc, meaning it will push prices of AiB Vega 64's above $600, meaning this side of the pond AIB Vega 64's will be well north of £600.

Perhaps this is why there hasn't been much talk from AiB's regarding their own custom cooled Vegas as they know they'll be overpriced for their performance

The 56 will retail at around £450. Quote from Gibbo...

Expect $399+TAX to convert to somewhere between £349-£399 with VAT and then don't be shocked if within one hour of launch the LAUNCH stock sells out and the price jumps to around £450+ area.
gotta support the underdog right :p

The 1080s do look good value, G-sync costs notwithstanding. I don't think AMD have much room to move on pricing as the reference cards look expensive to make - they all have excellent VRMs for example. Perhaps partner AIB manufacturers will be able to deliver cost-optimised variants that can be priced more keenly and so compete with the 1080s that have been out on the market for ages. Unless AMD intentionally gimp mining performance (which is highly unlikely) - Vega won't be available cheaply enough so I think the 1080s will remain better value for most gamers.

The issue,is against the GTX1070,Vega56 looks solid and we all know as time progresses,it will move even further away. Vega also has the best DX12/Vulkan support of any GPU(well until Volta comes along which will be another thing),so at similar prices unless you are building a SFF rig(like my rig) I think it is the better choice in general and it also has the performance NOW,as even in Nvidia sponsored titles it does well. Remember how the GTX1060 6GB was slightly faster at launch and now the RX480/RX580 seems to be ahead?? The same will happen.

However,a GTX1080 has enough of a performance increase over a GTX1070,and a Vega56 NOW,to hold its own methinks,so at a similar price it will be a better choice IMHO OFC. Also, regarding the underdog thing,AMD still needs to deliver on the product stakes TBF!! :p

Agree. Not only is the 1080 more efficient it's also cheaper for the same average performance.

And you get an AIB cheaper than the crappy stock blower on Vega.

Dont you all get bored of regurgitating the same stuff over and over and over again. Every time I come into one of these threads its the same thing since Monday, its now Thursday.

Its incredibly simple, dont like it, dont buy it. This will actually help if people dont buy it because they have to lower the prices.

The way I read it there are no card only deals available to buy, only "free game" deals at 599 rrp. This would seem to be an AMD decision, card only 499 was limited stock only on release day. So if card only 499 or 450 sterling can't be bought, it's a little disingenuous for AMD to keep using 499 price.

You're right, it seems so reading that kitguru article.

That wouldn't work out too well. I suppose it depends if AMD includes them in the 'bundle pack' promotion or whether that is only for the reference models shipped for the launch and AIB's expected to target the 499 price.

This is what I think is going to happen. The 499$ was apparently limited if we are to believe to feedback, but 599$ is also a limited offer ... So what comes next ? I'm guessing the AIB cards will take over the =/+599$ price point and then the ref coolers will be sold at anywhere between 499 and 599, probably not 499$, and the pack offer will end when the AIBs release their cards somewhere around end September maybe(probably) later.

Vega 56 is solid but unfortunately it can never be cost effective to produce in numbers at a price that's reflective of it's performance.
When compared against the smaller cheaper to produce more efficient gp104 which serves both desktop and Laptop, Rx vega will never manage to get into the laptop sector without sacrificing so much power that it'll scale around an rx580/1060. So Amd are not only late to the party they cannot cater for mobile and desktop, although they have the Vega Fe for workstation/Fury Duo class etc.

For Amd to compete for the next year, they either have to refine the 14nm process to attain 2-2.1ghz, they need to offer a bigger Vega at 72, and they have to promote their architecture in the latest game engines and utilize some of their hardware features. Otherwise unless they can manufacturer a smaller die size then they are stuck in limbo mode.

SFF like yourself is very relevant to me, hence I appreciate Zotac's efforts in their 1060 amp, 1070/80/80ti mini's.
I'd love to see Vega Nano.

Sites all need to re review the card based on the prices people can buy them for.

The 8/10's etc I can see slipping to 5/10's

Exactly. It seems AMD had a ploy to eek out more points on review scores knowing full well the price they mentioned was not going to stick longer than a day.

I guess that depends on what the Vega 56 card sells for, As most reviews gave the good score because of the 56 card not the 64 one.

There's no way the 56 is going to retail post offer for 399, so those scores are invalid as well

Reviews take into account cost and value, AMD flat out lied

Unless they want to kill the 64 at birth the 56 won't be too far away in end pricing, 10% performance difference and the 64 selling for 599, my guess is the 56 will be set at 349 at launch ( for 5 minutes) and then 499 thereafter
