Poll: The Vega Review Thread.

What do we think about Vega?

  • What has AMD been doing for the past 1-2 years?

  • It consumes how many watts and is how loud!!!

  • It is not that bad.

  • Want to buy but put off by pricing and warranty.

  • I will be buying one for sure (I own a Freesync monitor so have little choice).

  • Better red than dead.

Yup seen that, had to wonder whats going on with system ram, and not shocking really as vega is running on amped up fury drivers and its not got rasterisation, rpm, hbcc, pd/ps etc enabled yet, all the fun of crap drivers.

Pay attention to 0:38 as he turns the right hand corner, 0:53 as he turns to the left, etc. (there are some other instances but can't be bothered to list them all) nVidia seems to be using lazier garbage collection and some kind of pre-emptive shader loading while AMD is only loading in data as needed which is causing momentary hitches.

That is quite a big difference in system memory though I wonder if they are both using same feature level, etc. there must be something else going on even taking nVidia specific functionality into account.

ye i think i was asking you about this the other night and you sent me to those great resources.

I've noticed the difference in system RAM usage before but I've never really given it that much thought as I run 16GB systems and it doesn't seem to cause any additional side effects.

This is the big difference between FreeSync and Gysnc. Taken from the second paragraph from the end of here:

"The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 does appear to be the best bang for the buck with the Vega cards. If you are an AMD fan and wanting to build a nice new gaming rig with a display that features FreeSync technology the Vega 56 looks like it should do really well. This is because the FreeSync range on most 4K displays is between 40-60Hz and between 48-100Hz on some of the new 11440P UltraWide gaming displays. The AMD FreeSync Certified range is 30Hz to 144Hz, but most monitors don’t have a range that wide. Ideally you want the minimum frame rate to be in the displays FreeSync range to get a smooth gaming experience. Setting up a FreeSync display for your gaming system is less costly than an NVIDIA G-Sync solution, so that is one area that AMD will be heavily pushing with Vega.

With Gysnc you get the full 30-144hz range. And I presume that's any Gsync enable monitor.

Isnt part of the freesync2 thing all about having to meet very stringent features like full freesync range, color saturation or something and picture quality. I mean it says something when one of the first freesync2 monitors is an oled, expensive an all but damn

edit, and adaptiv sync ???

Well i said this in another thread so i hope this aint classed as double posting but we know a shed ton of stuff aint enabled yet and the vega is basically a pumped up fury right now. But what were amd thinking when they did that poor volta sticker, do they know something about vega that we dont or do they know something about volta.

This is the old quote from a few days back :) Techpowerup just late to the party.

That quote hasn't clarified anything sadly related to price, but more related to stock.

I believe it will never get clarified.

This allows retailers to keep saying they couldnt sell say RRP without a rebate. (we only have their word for it).
It also allows reviewers defending the price aspect of the reviews to say "well I am not going to change a review based on speculation", they know they can stick to that line for as long as AMD never makes a clarification. This is the line Kyle is taking as an example.

Based on what Kyle said to me last week, in that he hints something favourable is coming to the prices, I expect we might see another batch of cards with a rebate aimed at trying to silence the moaners (people like me) , but I think it will be temporary again, not a new lower long term RRP.

It can only be reviewed and received as it is.
