Is it possible to turn off the ribbon UI in explorer and go back to the current W7 look? also is it possible to have the standard start menu back without it opening metro?

Currently for me the worst bit of os x Lion is the IOS style app launcher simply because I don't know anyone that uses it, the metro UI part looks like it'll be the same.

They haven't said anything yet, but theres still a lot of dev time left so who knows.

Other websites (can't remember the link) have shown a start menu (albeit different from Windows 7).

You can collapse the ribbon.

Also after watching the task notes, you won't want to turn metro off, remember unlike iOS, tiles are dynamic and show info.
But it runs both, so if you want to switch to normal desktop you just press the windows key.

actually have to agree with acidhell2. i can see the simple style of metro being something i'd use even on my desktop. i can't remember the last time i used the start menu, i just use the quick launch and go from there and i'd much prefer a more useful way to use my programs/apps. i have a desktop with nothing on it (i like cleanlyness but also if there space and it can be used why not) and i never see it.

i bet we still wont see proper multi mon support though. the most basic of basic things it's ridiculous.

There's a lot of new multiple monitor support in the keynot videos, I don't use any multi mon though, so I have no idea how it stacks up against 3rd party software.

Wow, that was worth 2hours. No wonder they haven't released a tablet. Apple and android are going to be massively behind when this ships.

And very nice move, shipping pre developer with visual studios.people can start developing there apps and see how they work, with probably a year before release.
And they have to do so little work,I thought visual studio 8 years ago was amazing, but now it's so much easier.

my pc is too weak for virtualising - only 3gb of ram. :(

edit: i'll dual boot. i have no idea why i didn't think of this before. no need for opticals/usb stick. just mount the iso and hope it runs. :)

So forgive me for not being up to speed, but are they planning on Win8 being a total replacement for Win7 (bog standard desktops) or is just a fancy attempt to jump on the tablet type OS bandwagon?
ie. Will it be a step up overall for normal Win7 owners, in terms of technicality and use of resources etc
Downloading it as we speak lol Just to try it on a spare PC.
