***The Wine Thread***

So I recently dug in to the Wine Society, as it's my step brother's wedding in December and we wanted to get them something that they liked, wine being a great choice.
It's going to be 7 wines to have on different occasions throughout life. My Mum mentioned the Wine Society (http://www.thewinesociety.com/) and I was like meh, it'll be crap wine... but I went through a lot of the wines to pick them out for him/ them and there were some great ones on there and from all over.
Worth a look as it's much better range than supermarkets.
The Wine Society is very good, I have a friend who uses them regularly. I'll be joining very shortly too.

I've just ordered another case of 6 bottles the wife will now kill me about... I think we have 75 bottles in the cellar and another ~30 upstairs.

100 bottles is nothing. A year's supply if you're not laying down for the future? 100 bottles is one bottle a week for yourselves and another bottle a week for when you go out or host.

Just sent my Christmas Order to Laithwaites... £430

1 box of my choice of reds:

2 x El Bombero Gran Reserva 2010 - personal fave, does well on Vivino
1 x Black Stump Reserve Shiraz 2015 - recommended, first try
1 x Beyond the Black Stump Shiraz 2015 - recommended, first try
1 x Camino de Seda 2015 (Monastrell) - popular at Laithwaites, first try
1 x Edizione Limitata Quinta Botte Amarone No 12 2013, earlier vintages smash it on Vivino, first try
1 x Monti Selezione Merlot 2010 - I love Italian wine, first try
1 x Monsparone Barolo Riserva 2007 - destined for Xmas dinner with wild boar
1 x Pronce de Courthezon 2015 - Rhone Gsm-type mix, previously enjoyed the 2013
1 x La Poulardiere 2015 - another Rhone Gsm-tye
1 x Domaine La Tour des Abbesses 2015 - Another Rhone gsm.. I'm so predictable
1 x - Il Papavero Papaverone 2014 thick Sicilian red does well on Vivino

Got a box of whites for the missus (Laithwaite's Loire Valley selection). Will list the champers in the champy thread.

Managed to save one bottle of my fave Austrian red from our May holiday too, even if I managed it by hiding it from myself.

Good man! Let me check out those Vivino links later when I get a sec.

They're amazing. For 11 euros it's just utterly fantastic. Such a great wine. I ordered another 6, thinking I should get another lot.

EDIT: I looked now lol they look stunning! I W/L'd the last one as VFM vs Rating looks top and the sort of thing I'd love. Saying that the others look amazing. You'll have fun.

Just back from France.. 94 bottles of beer.. and a simple case case of Mouton Cadet 2014. A heavier wine for the Ros beuf/Venison/BBQ..

I still have a "backlog" of things like Pogue, etc.. including some decent bottles squirrelled away..

Has anyone tried the Exquisite Collection Argentinian Malbec from Aldi?

I've never sampled Malbec so not sure if I'd like it. What is it similar to?

I heard Oz Clarke on the radio the other day and he mentioned Uco Valley being a good region. That Aldi wine is from there and is a bargain price at £5.99. I'll likely give it a try over Christmas.

Uco Valley is indeed a very good wine producing region, but you'll also get some not-so-great wines from there. Malbec was one of the lesser blending grapes used in Bordeaux but in recent times Argentina have almost made it their own, producing some lovely wines. It is generally more full bodied, and different wines from different producers will vary, but think dark berry fruits, some violet and spice. There may also be a nice amount of tannin which helps it go well with good red meat (Argentinia steak!), and some oakyness from the barrels they use. The Aldi wine is young, so expect it to be mainly fruit driven and I'd have thought it would be fairly smooth. It appears to have a decent rating and reviews but of course that doesn't mean you'll like it. I've not tried it but at £5.99 if you don't like it, it hasn't cost you a lot :).

I spent a couple of hundred quid on booze in Aldi last year and will be popping back this year. The exquisite collection has never let me down. Fill your boots

Cheers. I've got myself a bottle for tonight. Nothing much to lose at £5.99.

Will report back in a few hours. :)

I'm after a bottle for a gift for my Grandfather. It would almost certainly be drunk with red meat, so given that what would you recommend?

Budget is anything up to £35.

TIA :)
