***The Wine Thread***

Cheers. I've got myself a bottle for tonight. Nothing much to lose at £5.99.

Will report back in a few hours. :)

It's very nice. Heavy dark red isn't usually my thing but this is very pleasant. Strong stuff as well (13%).

I'm after a bottle for a gift for my Grandfather. It would almost certainly be drunk with red meat, so given that what would you recommend?

Budget is anything up to £35.

TIA :)

If you get it in the UK. 100% tannat, so open well in advance of drinking.

Superb wine for the price. My favorite bottle to have with a nice steak.

This is a lovely cheap white for a chilled summers day - http://www.plaimont.com/boutique/saint-mont/le-hat-trick/. Very fruity with a nice little tang to get the cheeks twitching.

Plaimont is my local vinyard, so I tend to throw a lot of business their way... ;)

Can someone else grab a bottle of the Exquisite Collection Argentinian Malbec from Aldi and give it a review?

It was my first Malbec so I have nothing else to compare it to.

Is it available in-store or just online? If it's available in-store I'll try to find one and pick a bottle up. My inlaws will be suprised at me 1- visiting an Aldi, and 2- buying a bottle of wine from there!
What were your thoughts on it?

You can get a cracking bottle for £35, and there are absolutely loads to choose from. Will you shop local to you, or happy to do online? Does he have any preference for red wine - heavier reds like a Cabernet Sauvignon, or lighter like a Pinot Noir?

Just a few wines that I know of, all from very good producers:

A good Brunello

Purple Angel. A favourite of Randomshenans although I'm not sure about this vintage

Chilean Shiraz

South African Pinot

Aussie Shiraz

Another Aussie Shiraz

Aussie Grenache

Thanks for the reply.

Definitely a red, and I'm more than happy to buy online.

I think he prefers a smoother wine, but I think heavier is his preference.

I'll have a look at those later, thanks!

No problem. That's a supplier that I've used a lot, but I'm not sure what delivery for a single bottle would be. Alternatively a decent local wine shop or even a Majestic (they have some good wines in their fine wine selection) should be more than able to guide you to a very nice wine for that price.

Full bodied, deep purple in appearance, you can tell it's come from a sunnier climate from it's bold full flavour. Bags of body, with a well rounded finish to the palate and no harsh tannins. With any wine, allow it an hour to open up once the bottle is opened, but even if you don't, it's not as impactful as you'd get with a Bordeaux for example. The 2010 and 2012 vintages were utterly superb, but in very short supply now if you can find them. The 2013 is also very very good, in fact I have a bottle at home myself.
A spicy, complex and well balanced red that you can enjoy with meat, or sitting in your pants on the sofa. Either way, you'll enjoy it.

Better?

Yes, I went into an Aldi store just to pick one up. It was OK but I'm not really a fan of that type of red. I thought it would give me a huge hangover and I wasn't wrong. I think I'll stick to white or rose next time. :p

Thanks for the reviews link randomshenans. It's OK, nothing more, according to them. I certainly wouldn't put anyone off giving it a try at £5.99.

Got a case of 6 of these arrive yesterday too. It's one I've previously mentioned and I just think it's utterly superb for the price I paid.

11 euros, and it's just such a full flavoured, big character and complexity wine for the money. It's big, but not so heavy you couldn't open a second. It definitely improves when open about an hour, really starts to give some amazing notes.

If you can get it under 15quid, I'd really give it a try if you're in to a bold big red.
