The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

It is making me think that maybe it is best to play HOS before B&W.

Absolutely... I played the main game up until nearly the end, then did all of HOS, back to the main game and finished the story... and then treated B&W as an Epilogue... Perfect that way... The HOS stuff fits into the main story as what feels like a very extended (and awesome) series of sidequests... but the B&W stuff feels like too much of a departure to slot in before the end of the main story - why would Geralt run off to Toussaint and chill in his new pad and all that when so much was still at stake?

I finally completed the main quest after 65 hours play time, what an experience it has been, hopefully they continue the series after 2077 is released.....

65 hours... You gotta whole lot of ? to slog through yet! I think I gave up ? hunting at about 150 hours, bit pointless after a while. Still one of my fav games to date. Although I bought the expansions I have still to play the Vampire one yet, I think I burnt myself out on ?.

Yeah still tons to do, I've dived straight in to hearts of stone which is quite good so far, done the 1st mission in blood and wine aswell but saving the rest of that for later, does look epic though.

Seeing as I've nearly finished Prey I thought I'd finally get around to installing TW3.. Only 4 years after release but better late than never. Hopefully my PC will be able to run it well now too! Are there any mods that are worth installing for a first play through? Or is it just best to play it vanilla?

The ones that stick to Vanilla but simply improve visuals are:

HDReworked Project - This one is a MUST, they're basically higher res textures. So long as you have vram, they cost nothing in terms of performance.

Tweaks - This one doesn't change anything in the game, it simply gives you more options in the in-game menu to change things rather than having to edit the ini config.

All Quest Objectives on Map - This one changes map so that it has more info on it in terms of icons. It is a BIG quality of life improvement.

HD Monsters Reworked - In the same spirit as HDRP above it, this is a graphical update to monsters without actually changing how they look generally from vanilla. More of getting them to a higher-res level than anything else.

Beautiful Grass - This just changes grass, but only for vanilla not expacs.

Blood - Improves blood, it sprays more and in a more dramatic fashion.

No Dirty Lens - Basically what is says, you don't get dirty screen effect anymore.

Improved Signs - Ups the GFX of signs, particularly particle count.

Increased Draw Distance - As the name says. For me it's a must have because I'm very particular about this setting & can never get enough. Also only for Vanilla, though there's a Toussaint version supposedly.

Auto-Apply Oils - It does a scan around you for enemies and based on their type it automatically applies the relevant oil to your weapon. It's both greatly convenient & somewhat iffy because it feels like too much convenience almost. Sadly, I think ultimately this is down to a game design problem where oils sounded good in theory & were appropriate to the lore but just didn't make sense as a game system as it is. Since they're not going to rework it, I say just use the mod.

See above. :) At the very least install HDReworked Project, it honestly should be bundled with the game.

Decided to finish this. Completed the main game I'm 2016 and got bored halfway through the first DLC. Heard the second is better so going to finish it and maybe onto NG+.

Still looks great to my eye :)

I play this on my 1070ti, I can max it at 1080p capped at 60fps with no drops. I decided to try it at 4K on my TV with hair works off and some settings on medium and high and I get dips down to 42 FPS and maxes at about 51 in some areas. Pretty much unplayable with the dips to 42. I used GeForce to optimise to see what it did, it has every setting on Ultra apart from foliage distance which is on low and hair works is off. I am now at 60fps all the time, my TV says it is 4K but it has insane screen tearing although vsync is on in game. What on earth did GeForce do to get a 1070ti with almost all settings on ultra to play 60fps at 4K? Something seems wrong, screen tearing for one.

@Witcher1980 Interesting. I've never bothered using that GeForce Experience thing to optimize games. Might give it a try. I found the Witcher III was all over the place on my 1070 at 4K. Maybe it'll work to smooth out my frame rate, too.

Yeah give it a shot, first time I have used it as well. But as said I now have screen tearing and vsync is on in the game settings. Will play around again later, let me know your outcome if you get time.

Didn't quite work for me. I am getting 4K30 at GeForce settings with Vsync on. Turning Vsync off increased it to about 40-50fps. Would have to lower another few settings probably to reach 4K60. I only have a Dell barebones 1070 though so need some more juice.

Might GeForce Experience overrule the Vsync game setting? Would explain the tearing.

I can't stand people who insist on modding a game from the outset. Just play it as intended, it looks phenomenal!
Depends on what they are modding. Graphical mods are fine, I just installed Spyro reignited and knew going in that I preferred his older shade of purple so changed it. Some people hate inventory management so will remove carrying limits, or maybe they really don't care for Gwent so can mod it out of the game. Great thing about modding is that people are free to do what they want.

Yes I think you are right, I will have to look to see if I can find where geforce stores setup files for each game. Small video below just showing what it squeezed out of a 1070ti. Excuse the quailty, I am also losing a few frames due to recording.

TBF, that's pretty impressive with a 1070Ti. W3 was one of the reasons I upgraded GPU after getting a 4K TV. Sadly the GPU cost more than the damned TV. :p

Yeah totally shocked with the 1070ti tbh seeing as before I used geforce it would constantly dip to 42fps. I turned on fast sync, I know this is normally for frames that are double your refresh rate but it is a test and the tearing has stopped atm.

What Gpu did you upgrade to? Can't see sigs on my phone when viewing this forum. Really want to upgrade this but don't really want to spend more than £500 to £600 max tbh.

2080Ti. It was too much but I’d already put money aside for it before it was launched and took the plunge anyway. :D

The top current AMD GPU would fit your budget if you’ve got the upgrade itch.
