Think you can hide on Farcebook? Not any more.

Today I went out with mates for lunch and one mate wouldn't leave the table until he had taken a photo of his empty plate, messed about with Instagram settings to change its colour, upload it then check into FB... Seriously?

Raymond Lin?

This is fine with me, don't see why you should be able to hide on there anyway if you set up an account imo, just lock your profile down so people cannot see any personal info, pictures or timeline, block anyone from emailing you apart from friends, this is a non-issue unless you are hiding something.

If you have issues close your account and put your tin hat on whilst backing away from the Internet :)

or you would prefer nosey people didn't try to spy on you, must be good news for stalkers

I also don't really see the issue with this.

If you keep everything else hidden and locked down, likely to friends only, then all somebody searching for your profile is likely to even find is your name. There really isn't much to be gathered from that, other than that you are on Facebook.

Which is also arguably useful because if you are on Facebook, but trying to be private, how do your friends even find you on there anyway?

I guess it's all about choice. Yes it's a social networking site, but that doesn't mean I want any old stranger to be able to easily see my profile but that's why I use the privacy settings to prevent this. If Facebook removed these options then I'd be unhappy & close my account but I doubt they will.

How does Joe Nobody get stalkers anyway? you're not famous? sure it can be an issue with ex's and such but there is ways to deal with it without making it a big issue since most seem to make it.

Surely they can't stalk you if your profile is made private to some degree therefor you don't approve them? I mean with the new settings. If you don't approve them and have a strong mind, they can't annoy you? all these settings and it can't be dealt with?

If you can't see the difference between an anonymous Online Forum and intrusive Social Media sites then I feel there's little hope of me being able to explain it to you in a simple enough way for you to understand.

And if you can't understand how to use facebook so it acts like this OCUK Social Networking site then there's no hope for you either.
For example I've just seen a post in a school thread and seen an old name from 69 to 74 so decided to find out more about him and what he's doing now - I couldn't.
Even a 55 year old bloke knows how to use it.

Surely if you have your timeline as private then no one but friends can see it. Also if you get a random friend request then you just ignore/block that person? To top all that dont put much on fb in the first place?

Yup - that would be the sensible thing to do... but still people like to get all butt hurt about facebook and 'privacy'

All I want is maximum privacy for myself and zero privacy for the teams of people I'm stalking, how do I do this?

i have everything hidden except my name and picture, and when i try the 'view as public' all i get is my name and picture. Thats fine by me

Congratulations, you know how to work Facebook unlike some of the posters in here.
For a forum full of computer nerds I'm gobsmacked sometimes.

I always find it funny when people complain about being able to be found on sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc.

They're SOCIAL NETWORKING sites. Completely hiding your profile on these sites is the equivalent of going to a party and hiding under the coats in the cupboard under the stairs.

Why is it funny? I want to be able to choose who see's my content thanks, I like to keep my personal life, and professional life separate.

So you don't tell the people who you work with your name then? That's the only thing they are going to get if you've set it up right and I suspect they already know it.

So basically you're saying you have no friends at work? Because that would be creating a bridge between your personal and professional lives. ;)

Sadly I use facebook a lot due to socialising through it.

Whilst I don't agree with the choice above, I treat facebook like a forum, anything I post, anyone can see... I don't understand why people get so pepped up over being hidden and secret on FB. It's a social site... It's bound to be open.
