TBH I prefered the way the Renault hatchbacks drove to the VWs. They are much more characterful and you get more feedback. You get much more for your money with them too.

As I said in my OP, it'll be the new year before I do anything because prices at the minute are just insane.

But if things settle back down to some sort of normal then it's looking more like Jaguar XE, Mercedes C class, BMW 3 series. These seem to be better value for 20k than a Golf or a late model Scirocco.
