this is shocking

3940 stable with my freezer pro... hot.. hitting 76c 100% both procs, but damn! this is a hell of an performance boost from stock!

/me goes off th look for a mach II... (dual 5ghz here we come \o/)

 wth voltage are you using to get 76c?

What PSU do you have? And the rest of your spec? cheers

it doesnt work out much cheaper in the long run. the psu and the cooling you'd need for it would eat that budget up

Cooling is £17, same as a freezer 64 pro (7pro) and the PSU I am using was £40. Less than the one in my athlon 64 system.

yeah and your running 60c on loud cooling consuming nearly 2 1/2 times the power of my 3ghz opteron 148, or wtice that of an fx60. i know you have a point but im failing to see it. oh yeah throw the cost of powering it in there as well lol.

They are cheap as chips and good clockers, but i wouldnt run one as a main cpu, purely because of the heat and current draw.

Mine is running <60c load on stock cooling with a 120mm fan in the side panel so the HS fan is always at it's lowest, all case fans at either 7 or 5v and a seasonic PSU. It was only loud when I just cranked it up to 3.8ghz/1.5v and the cpu fan increased to 3300rpm.

I doubt it uses 3x as much power, even if it uses twice as much it is dual core after all, and the cost of powering an extra 80w... oooh those light bulbs can be expensive ;)

http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores_uk/page15.html

fx57 - 199 watts
fx60 - 223 watts
pentium d 805 @ 4ghz - 404 watts.

pentium d @ 4.1ghz with the gpu loaded - 512watts.

did you read that review? try two HUNDRED watts.

well we're not talking about running these at stock, are we?

Mine isnt at 4ghz though is it, and the voltage isnt as high.

You are right, we arent talking about running the CPU stock, what does my cooling have to do with that?

It is 3.6ghz with 1.45v.

so your cpu isnt relivant then, obviously? try running 4ghz. There's no point in say 'im using the stock cooler and its quiet and cheap so there, you're wrong. oh i mean im runing 3.6ghz, not 4ghz.'

my operton runs 47c load. i only have 120mm fans running <1400rpm in my case. 2 case fans, one psu fan, one cpu fan. Thats at 3ghz.

I am not running it as my main CPU.

Of course it is relevent, it is performing at similar levels to a 4400+ for a third of the price, I never said I was running 4ghz.

Using a scythe ninja right? I'm sure I could do the same with the pD if I bought a scythe ninja, I am running 3 120mm case fans with the Pentium all at <1000rpm, same for the PSU fan.

james.miller said:
no you couldnt lol. It puts out a hell of a lot more heat than an opteron.

Well, if it is only about 10c more using stock cooling which has a much lower cooling capability and slower case fans... then it should.

Stock cooling is 0.23C/W, so if the CPU is putting out 160w it is 36.8c over ambient at load (seems about right).
The Ninja with a 1200rpm fan is 0.17c/w which is 27.2c above ambient.
9c lower.

yeah that's not a 4ghz though. you NEED to be running 4ghz to give the dual core optys a good running, but then the temps will rise.

i dont even know why im arguing with you over this  i never said it wasnt an exceptional cpu.

Fair enough it isnt at 4ghz, but dual core opterons arent available for 80 quid. Even if it was 200w of waste energy the scythe would only be ~10c higher than your single core opteron.

Must be the weather :D

PSU is a Hyper type r, have an Asus P5N32 SLi Deluxe, 2 68gt's @ 420/1120, 2 36gig raptors, dvd/cd-rw, patriot 1gig (2x512) pc7200 ram..

Oh yeah the voltage is, err, high, at 1.625 atm :) gonna keep pushing it, dont care if it goes bang tbh, i prefer my oppy rig, much better :):)

Who cares about noise and power consumption :D

Can't deny that this is quite remarkable for a cpu at this price, it has really turned my head and got me thinking!

me too :D but the motherboard for this thing is quite pricey if you want a decent one so ..:(
