This is why people are losing respect for the police...

Oh yikes, the police arrested some soap dodger types and they're a bit upset:

Sounds horrible, why would the police arrest them for this noble cause of handing out rape alarms...

Oh, wait...

Hmmmm

Also just happens to be part of a known protest group who have form for publicity stunts in central London.

What part of free speech requires rape alarms?
You also aren't free to say what you want, wherever you want. There's a time and place.

Yeah a time and place that you are happy with. Imagine protesting at a time and place that other aren't happy with, how outrageous :rolleyes:I won't be hearing you go on about free speech at any point in the future.

So I could just walk in to a mosque during the middle of prayers and call them all paedo idolising and deluded?
Can guarantee if I did that I'd swiftly get escorted out by the police too, and probably charged with disturbing the peace at the least.

Engage your brain for a change.

So arresting people for crimes they haven't yet committed and their "crime" was that they wanted to protest, this is now fine

I never want to hear some of you talking about free speech again.

Yeah XR or extinction rebellion a group known for simply exercising free speech... by blocking roads in London. Totally not a risk just before a massive public event

I think you may find a Mosque is a private building. Why have you had to bring muslims in the conversation? WTF is wrong with you?

Anyway enough of your nonsense.

Publicly accessible buildings. They're not invite only. Heck I could stand outside and do the same with the same result.

Run away now Tony. Go back to defending your racist chum Abbott.

If they’d been handing out something innocuous I could see your point, but the rape alarms kinda makes them a threat to public safety. What if a horse had igotten spooked and someone got seriously injured - you’d be screaming blue murder the police had failed to act.
No win for them really so they picked the least bad option in my opinion. They detained a small minority to protect a large majority - kinda how I want a police force to work

Well we are taking the police word for it that that is what they were planning. And considering they were arresting people today for the crime of wanting to hold up placards, I'm not feeling the police are being the good guys here.

Can't blame them though can we? These people have shut down major motorways, glued themselves to all sorts of stuff and generally made an absolute mess of themselves. I too would rather err on the side of caution when something as big as this is happening.

Nope. Police aren't allowed to prevent crime now. Can only respond after someone has become a victim...

Nice to know thoughtcrimes are now supported, i'm sure the next government won't take that to the next level at all.

The problem is simple really, had the last few years of protests not antagonized half the country and actually achieved anything, nobody would care. Sadly the truth is that we've had people chain themselves to things, glue themselves to things, and generally make a nuisance of themselves. And they've not really achieved much apart from alienating the very people they want to have on their side.

Due to this, the cops are operating on a very clear "guilty until proven innocent" system and I don't think anyone can blame them.

"We're just carrying out an innocent protest" doesn't fly at this point, not even close. Not when they've literally made society hate them as much as we do.

A million people protested against the war in Iraq, and it still went ahead. Protesting is dead, so we have to get dirty.

protestors discussing their arrest on twitter&co probably naively discussed their plans on the same (compromised?) media - probably haven't heard of Kashoggi or Pegasus;
inspecting communications seems ideal application for chatgpt.
