Tired of Panel Lottery, suggestions

If only they could sort the bleed and glow issues, ips would be the best LCD panel tech, despite lower contrast ratio.

But I just couldn't risk getting one like Uaon has ended up with. I strongly suspect he will send that back, and so he should. But most of them look like that to more or less of a degree.

Buying a monitor is a very frustrating time :(

I don't really notice the white on my Samsung, not looking at it from the front anyway. Only a bit of white on the stand visible. I'd have preferred black though.

Can't disagree with you :)

Annoying when you pay over £700 for a monitor and then having to face the panel lottery draw to see if you have a keeper or not. It is not good for the retailer either.
Point taken about the white for the Samsung, but I too would have preferred black.
It is an amazing screen tho and buying such a panel like a VA type does seem to offer you the best chances of getting a keeper. It is the 21:9 aspect ratio which bothers me the most.
Having to arrange a courier to send the monitor back reminded me that none of them will offer a guarantee against damage, loss only.

Yes, 21:9 is pretty much a niche aspect ratio :)

For the type of games I play a lot of, it's fantastic though. Gives you a much wider more immersive view of the Gameworld.

It shows just how much money these companies make on pc monitors when they put up with endless returns rather than making changes to the manufacturing process.

For me I can't help but think about perceived value.

Spending over £700 on a 4k 32" screen gets me what it did. But spending that sort of money can get me a very respectable 50" 4k TV. I know that there are many reasons why that is so but still I do not get the feeling of VFM when I buy a monitor, especially with the horrendous quality control.

^^^^ the above was pretty informative, regarding IPS Vs TN. Missed the "one in the middle" tho, the VA panel.

Yes, it does rankle when you see 50 inch 4k TVs without all the horrendous bleed problems going for less than we pay for a 34 inch 1440p screen :(

I guess it is down to how many units they can sell. High end desktop PC's are very much a niche market these days.

And there are various reasons why I wouldn't use a TV as a pc monitor.

Looks like a typical ips panel to me. They really do suffer with glow and bleed :(

No not to the extent that its visible in bright light, I have had Dell Ultrasharps for years and they have had ips glow ( silver sheen) which go away if yoiu look left ot right of the glow, bleed doesn't change no matter the angle you look at it from, this was at less than half brightness too.

I have never had to return anything to OCUK before is it prepaid free shipping in the case of a fault like most other companies or do I have to foot the bill? As far as I am aware if the product is faulty the seller pays return right? cheers

This is what bugs me about courier and retailers, I bought my AOC from the rainforest but they have now changed their returns services to only offer PassMyParcel (awful service reviews) or send it back via your own means. I got turned away at a PMP drop off as the package was too big for their small corner store so I had to jump into a Post office and send it via Parcelfarce.

I've been worried all weekend whether the monitor would make it back to the retailer in the condition i sent it or at all. I wonder if this is an isolated case with the rainforest or whether they have now woken up to the fact that so many of these get returned and no longer offer a decent service for them.

All that you do is to open a live chat window, pre marking it to send you the transcript after it has finished. I directly asked them the question....

When I am looking to select a courier I am told.......
We can carry "monitor" but cover will only apply to loss and not damage (see our Limited Compensation Cover list). In addition to this, should you go on to purchase additional cover this would be applicable to loss only.

They replied.....

12:18 AM BST Gokul: There is no need use purchase additional cover to return the item. Just return the item using recorded delivery method and as soon as we receive the item we will issue full refund.

later in the conversation I asked....

If you accept full responsibility if the monitor is lost or damaged by the courier then I'm ok with not purchasing additional cover (an extra £45) for the cost of sending it back to you. As you have already stated that there is not need to purchase additional cover.

Again the reply confirmed....

12:29 AM BST Gokul: Sure, we take full responsibility and I do not want you to pay additional for the return postage.

So imo use the live chat feature and get a transcript as you have it in writing :)

Hope that helps.

Taking photos rarely give a true representation of how the problem appears in actual use. Also we all have our own ideas of what is acceptable.

If you can live with it do so, if not return it. Remember tho what has been posted in this thread regarding IPS and VA panels, and what your primary use would be.

Then again you must have done that already with the choice you already made.

Considering how many IPS type panels you have tried, and you like horror type games, maybe you need to think about something else.

It will always be a panel lottery as to what you end up with.

Good luck.

Its a beautiful panel once calibrated to be honest, I would allow some margin of glow/bleed but when its clearly intrusive as this one is its just not acceptable. I have used many Ultrasharp panels over the years and even with some glow they have never truly been intrusive, that said its far easier to run a lottery with dell directly. I have been through around 3 acer predators two Dell PB278qr's the first asus was perfect no backlight bleed but had several dead pixels, was such a shame the second one of those was a bananna, had a terrible yellow tint that w\s irremovable and a cluster of dead pixels in the centre of the screen. This Samsung would have been a keeper if the bottom right was just a bit less intrusive.

How do these faulty products even come to be sold?
I'm serious - try with some legal actions for a serious compensation.
You don't have to be patient that much and they to jump all over our heads and to allow themselves everything.

TBH, I have never seen such a tragedy anywhere.

Intel, Nvidia, Apple and Samsung have all been previously known to be extremely greedy. But that is simply too much

I do get the impression that whilst the bottom right could be the worse of the issues you mention the screen as a whole would not be a keeper.

As noted you might want to rethink the whole IPS choice considering what you enjoy using your screen for.

I do hope that you get a sympathetic response when you try and return the monitor.

Thankfully my 32" 4k monitor which was received back on Tuesday evening has now been refunded this morning. I'm on the fence now as to what to do, but no real rush.

The Samsung 21:9 is looking interesting, much to my surprise, but damn I missed the £50 off deal - it was on for only part of a day...!

I had a good session on elite dangerous last night and the game looks so much better on a VA panel. Better blacks, no light bleed or glow makes a huge difference to a game set in space.

There are occasions where a bit of motion blur is noticeable but I can put up with that. It's a minor grievance compared to ips drawbacks for me.

Can't disagree with you there.

I have Galac Civ III
NMS
Alien Isolation

and a stack of other games which could well benefit from such a panel. It is not just about the VA panel tho it is also how well Samsung seem to have implemented it into that monitor, along with their quantum dot technology.

The vertical height of a 1440p 21:9 is not going to be as bad as when I had a 21:9 1080p, that was ridiculous for vertical height.

Typical tho that they knocked £50 for only a matter of a few hours.

If Uaon could afford this Samsung screen he should be mightily impressed.
