I've made it a proper poll now, let's see how many people are wrong and say cold....

Jon Tickle had the right idea for a toaster, one that toasted the slices at different speeds so you'd just be finishing the first one when the second one popped up.

When I'm really hungry, I'll throw in 4 slices, and since it toasts in sets of 2 I'll wait like a minute before putting the second side on :D

It's the little things

Both :D

Hot if using a spread like Jam, peanut butter, honey etc on top of the butter.

Cold if using just butter (spread when still hot so it melts) to go with a full English breakfast or a simple cup'o'tea etc.

Can we add only toasted on one side please :)

Butter shall not be spread into the toast until it is cold and hence only on the toasted side

(3min.30) in the Freezer is about right depending on your freezer temp.

Has to be hot surely? If it goes cold I will eat it but that's very different to intentionally having it cold. That's more that I hate wasting food.

Proper butter technique is also required. Far too many people carve out huge holes in the butter then try and force it through the toast until their left with a tattered mess. You need a thin layer by scraping a good knife across the whole block of butter. That has the added benefit of melting quickly and doesn't cool the toast too much, then it has to be spread right to the edges. Leaves the butter in a good state for the next user and gives you the perfect toast in the process, not sure why you'd do it any other way :p

To those heathens talking about margarine - not only are you wrong but you can't actually buy margarine in the UK - it's all called spread (something to do with the fat content - it has to be 80% or higher to be legally called margarine iirc. Maybe now we've left the EU margarine will make a comeback?). Spread is equally wrong :p
