Today's mass shooting in the US

It's bizarre how people find a way to blame Republicans for a crime committed by a psychopathic serial killer, as if normal law abiding people who want to legally own and responsibly use firearms were the one's who committed the crime. It's like if we were to get some weird second hand blame for every Paedophile who uses a computer to download images of abuse simply because a lot of us enjoy PC gaming.

Seems people are trying to suggest blame on the cops for at least one of the kids getting killed
The police response has got a lot to answer for here.
The more that's said and comes out the less impressive they look. 40% of the town budget btw is on policing..yes 40%.

They sat on their asses for 35 minutes whilst this guy was shooting kids, meanwhile parents outside were trying to collectively organise to go in and got handcuffed. ***** infuriating.

Of course republicans aren’t directly responsible for these shootings, but what they are responsible for is blocking gun law reform that could potentially have stopped situations like this.

Not suspicious at all that they changed their story after heavy criticism.
Indeed, seemed like there were different versions of events right from the start, but it would have been nice if the official version could have been trusted.... Comes across like someone was trying to cover their own arse now.
Texas Ranger Victor Escalon said no armed guard challenged the teenage attacker and it is unclear if the school door was even locked.

It seems like what police did after more of them arrived on scene is still a bit unclear though. Eg were the officers entering the building 4 minutes after the gunmen (so 16 minutes after he first shot at the school) the pair who were apparently beaten back by gunfire after one or both of them were injured? If so how long was it until more officers went in.... The Reuters timeline does kind of read like not much happened between 11:44 and 12:40...
Mr Escalon said officers entered the school four minutes after the gunman went in at about 11:40.
But it was an hour before the gunman was killed in a shootout, at 12:45, after US Border Patrol tactical teams arrived.

From 11:40 a.m. to about 12:40 p.m. - Officers on the scene call for more help, requesting tactical teams, specialty equipment, body armor, precision snipers and hostage negotiators.

About 12:40 p.m. - U.S. Border Patrol tactical teams arrive, enter the classroom, and kill the suspect.

Not wanting to judge too harshly as I'm sure more information will come out and it may be there were reasons things played out the way they did (eg did they judge it had gone from an 'active shooter' situation to a 'hostage' situation due to information we don't yet know), but on the face if it it doesn't look like the response was what you'd expect, and it's odd how misleading some of the official statements were before.

Didn't he barricade himself into a classroom, I don't know the situation if the police response was quick or slow to go in, but I can't see whatever the response it would have saved the kids in the classroom where I believe all the shootings took place.
The news is reporting that it could be the doors to get in the school were not even locked or guarded?

He did. And when police entered the classroom there were kids in hiding inside the classroom. The police asked anyone to yell out for help even though they didn’t know the location of the shooter. The kid did and was then shot by the gunman. If the police, who train for this on a regular basis are this incompetent, what chance does Larry the Janitor or Miss Gonzalez who apparently republicans think should be given a Handgun to ‘protect’ students but might never have fired a gun in years or even at all will do? It’s a ridiculous suggestion.

Maybe if everyone had to undergo mental health checks as part of a comprehensive licencing procedure that needed repeating say every 10 years. Most states require people to renew their driving licences every few years. A simple change like that would mean loons could be filtered out and prevented from purchasing guns. Its not rocket science. I don't think anyone is seriously calling for guns to be banned but sensible reforms to be put in place. Would anyone want people in the UK to be able to just walk into a shop and walk out with a handgun or AR15 with zero checks or licencing?

Jeez, didn't know that.

40% of the budget on policing, and it takes an hour for a suitable armed response to turn up to an active shooting at a primary school.

Boggles the mind....let alone where all these heroic good guys with guns that we always hear about were hiding

You can't buy alcohol until you're 21 in the states and indeed some counties are completely dry, no booze sales at all yet this guy walked into a gun shop a few days after his 18th birthday, still a kid really full of raging hormones and perceived anger at the world and was able to purchase two AR-15 type assault rifles, 2,000 rounds of ammo and tactical gear including body armour and not a single flag or concern was raised by the gun store owner?

You think it's bizarre that people are blaming the people who constantly block legislation that would address this problem? Seriously?

Unfortunately he died

  • Police are calling a man a hero for shooting a gunman.
  • The man was then shot by police who mistook him for the gunman.

It's complete speculation that gun reform would have stopped this from happening, anyone determined to commit a crime like this could get a gun in a country with 400million or so of them.

So, if the highly trained and motivated police need a bunch of even more highly trained and motivated specialists, what chance does Miss School Teacher, the "good guy" have?

It really is a ridiculous argument

You're annoyed with Police because they didn't enter a school where an armed assailant was likely waiting to ambush them? Safely clearing a room of an armed gunman requires specialist training totaling hundreds of hours, SWAT teams and SF drill this down to a fine art because it's very easy to get killed doing it. I think a lot unfair assumptions are being made by people who are continuing to hate on Police based on the endless hate spewed towards them from BLM etc. Why not channel the hate towards the guy who actually murdered the kids instead
