Today's mass shooting in the US

And why are they armed...come on, you're nearly there!
Because they don't follow the law.

Are you wanting me to say wanting me to say because there are lots of firearms? That's your gotcha moment? Of course there are, it's firearms country, it's in the culture.

You've got yourself. They have them because they're readily available. They have made things dangerous for themselves there due to crap firearm controls.
If only there was some way where they couldn't have done that...if only...

It’s very unlikely that the laws will change or they will “just introduce gun control, bro”. How many times does it need to be repeated?

So because its unlikely people should give up?
Women getting the vote was unlikely. Australia banning guns was unlikely...hold on a minute!

The only way to make it more likely and actually happen is to strive for it.

I don’t think anyone realistically believes a blanket ban on guns will ever happen, it’s way, way too late for that. What IS needed are better controls and restrictions on the likes of an AR-15. Assault rifles that really only belong in the military. Better background checks, closing of loopholes such as ghost guns (buying parts for guns and building one yourself) and the gun show loophole along with the restriction on private sales. Why they restrict sales of alcohol until you’re 21 but you can buy a semi-automatic assault rifle at 18 is also a ridiculous restriction. The shooter at Uvalde bought his AR-15’s legally days after his 18th birthday.

They are semi-auto rifles, not assault rifles for the record. Restrictions on AR-15 style rifles is a restriction on semi-auto rifles, since the function is the same, the AR-15 style rifles are just the most common.

What do you mean restriction on private sales? The "gun show loophole" is private sales, it doesn't really have anything to do with gun shows.

Gun dealers run background checks in their retail store when selling weapons. At a gun show they can sell to anyone who rocks up to their stall.

Why are you so focused on the small number of crimes committed with semi automatic rifles? There are so many more young black men murdering other young black men with pistols in gang related homicides than there are mass shootings with AR-15s, these crimes could be mitigated with better security at schools, we have to treat these incidents like we treat planes after 9/11, schools need appropriate security measures. Period.

What would those measures be though?

It's not really for me to dream up security for schools but the US has a lot of money, maybe Biden could do something meaningful around this, there would be cross party support for protecting school kids I'm sure

I think just banning handguns and rifles for Joe Public would do that.

If you're a farmer or such then shotguns and rifles with strict controls. What's the problem? I know America's thing is being able to overthrow the government if they need to but this is the same organisation that can wage all out war on three or more fronts abroad. Homegamers do not have a chance in any reality

I know they could put up 12 foot high solid concrete walls, have checkpoints where everyone is strip searched upon entry whilst being covered by a sniper to make sure they don't try anything (and then have another sniper in case the first gets funky, who is covered by a third), and then have everyone in individual cubicles that they're only let out of when there are at least two armed guards per class (you need to have them able to cover each other) and an armed teacher to escort them to the next class.
You might want to make them all "boarding" schools to reduce the time wasted checking the children in and out.

Which is actually the logical conclusion to what the NRA and their political wing the Republican party are basically suggesting (especially given the level of security and how the kids are treated in many US schools by their current security).

The problem is that what you're suggesting isn't remotely realistic, so essentially you don't have a plan because it can't be implemented in America.

My old high school has high metal fences, why do they need to be solid concrete walls? You're just being ridiculous, I don't know why you bothered to type so much.

Because chain link fences do absolutely nothing to stop bullets, which means that you've still got a major security flaw in regards to the safety of the children when they're say during break times, chain link fences are also quite easy to get through with something that costs a lot less than a gun, and are less resistant to things like just driving through them.

Once you start to go down the route of "well we can harden the schools..." rather than "try and reduce the causes" you rapidly end up in a situation where what you are looking at is much more of a prison or a fortress than a school as you need to consider not just how many doors there are, but the entire perimeter.

Given the construction of many US schools the thing about "locking the classroom doors" is, and always has been a bit of a nonsense, many schools don't have internal walls that are enough to stop bullets, the doors aren't designed to do it either and many built in times when the NRA didn't run the Republican party were built with things like windows into the corridors so that you got more natural light and that visitors/staff could see into internal rooms without opening the doors.

it's also worth noting that the Republicans have pretty much stalled every attempt to even just make normal improvements in the education system, so the idea that they're going to agree to basically rebuild every school in the US to be a secure facility (more secure than many police stations) is laughable, and even if they did, what do you do for the next probably 10-25 years whilst they rebuild them? (as it's not just money).
