I think recent polls have indicated the majority of the American public are now in favour of tighter gun controls, it's just the politicians in the pockets of the NRA aren't
Indeed, the percentage of gun owner in the US is at an all time low, hence the bankruptcy of Remington and the financial issues of the other manufactures. But the gun owners and supporters are getting more and more vocal, and the NRA is pushing harder and harder.
In the end the NRA are trying to fight for the rights of an ISIS terrorist with mental disorders to buy guns without any kind of checks in place. I don't think that is a sustainable position to hold
