Today's mass shooting in the US

watched the 11 minutes documentary on iPlayer, horrific scenes. the damage that was done is such a short timeframe. i'm just so glad i live in a country where guns are banned
there's no hope for the states it seems, they want their guns and that's that

The thing is, it's only a minority of people in the US that own a gun, a very small minority that own most of the guns and the majority do want tighter gun control - something a lot of people arguing that the status quo is "wHaT tHe PeOpLe WaNt" seem to forget. The problem is the lobbyists have the politicians in their pockets so nothing does get done.

I believe the last time they checked the figures on gun ownership it sat at around 40% of US adults owning a gun with nearly 50% of American households having access to one. Figures have stayed the same roughly, although there is a slight increase since they started tracking this (early 70's).

The figures I have looked up and posted ITT a couple of times is ownership is ~30% (with about 3% owning the vast majority of the total of the guns) and ~41% of households.

It's totally normalised now, and they aren't even prepared to have any kind of conversation about it.

I said this on the first page of this topic, five and a half years ago. Has anything changed in that time besides the camps getting even more entrenched?

Problem is apart from the usual platitudes what is there to say? There's been two dozen incidents that should have been the one to wake them up but they're too concerned with "mah gunz" to do anything so people keep dying.

It's sad that I'm numb to it at this point, but if America is unwilling to change this is an inevitability.

Seems to be a lot of information missing. I know loads of people who go shooting with their kids, even in this country, without it turning into murder suicide - guns didn't make that kid go bad (or whatever was behind it - maybe she was abused for all we know), though the advisability of having access to firearms at that age and the level of supervision is another matter.

She got more guns....
Yeah this is written by a child? There must be some more credible legible information somewhere.

apologies for daily mail. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12227155/Girl-12-shot-dad-murder-pact-pictured-time.html

Whilst access to firearms certainly made her fantasy doable she was obviously suffering from some major psychological problems and probably not getting much support at home... Dumb way to go.

A schoolgirl who shot her father as part of a pre-planned murder-pact with a friend before turning the gun on herself

Unless I'm missing something, this doesn't make it any better. It just goes to show she was given access to firearms when she should never have had them.

All the information I can find seems to be trying to flesh out the same bare bones information with very poor and sensationalised reporting - talk of her getting hold of more guns a day later - so where was her mother and other siblings and the authorities in this or was her dad lying there incapacitated for hours?

EDIT: The report most of the media are basing their article on says she purchased additional firearms a day later...

Story is from last year, and she didnt wait a day before shooting herself either. Seems to be pretty messed up scenario but it's hardly a mass shooting is it. Good to see twitter comments are just as vile as always though.
