I'm not entirely sure what any of that has to do with being left-wing?
It's probably more to do with conflation and propaganda that seems to pervade modern society.

Personally I am more concerned about 48 murders on the streets of London in less than 4 months than what's happening in the USA....
And so you should, a result of consecutive cuts to police funding?
And so you should, a result of consecutive cuts to police funding?
In Chapter 4, we analyze the factors that were widely thought to have been major contributors to the 1990’s crime drop but which, according to the data, weren’t. These factors are:
— The strong economy
— The increased use of capital punishment
— Innovative policing strategies
— Gun control laws
— Concealed weapons laws
— The aging of the population
We also discuss the four major factors that, according to the data, were responsible for the crime drop:
— Increased reliance on prisons
— Increased number of police
— The bursting of the crack bubble
— The legalization of abortion
Absolutely not.And so you should, a result of consecutive cuts to police funding?
quite probably, yes... more police officers + longer prison sentences = less crime
IIRC freakonomics covered both of those
Gentrification. A driving force behind increased and eventual decreased rates in crime.I read a comment the other day from a New Yorker who suggested that another reason for a fall in crime is that NY has become very expensive to live in, Criminals simply cant afford to live there any more. Even Harelem is safe to walk in now.
Freakonomics is a great example of a popular science book which gained great traction from the public but isn't well regarded by people who actually know anything about the subject.
Re: the particular claim of abortion legalization leading to a crime drop, Wikipedia has some discussion.
I know, that abortion claim was particularly controversial.

Aye, something to do with what is basically thought to have been a low level of lead poisoning in children which lead to issues with the development of the brain*.Plus the removal of lead from petrol is also believed to be a factor in falling crime rates.
