Today's mass shooting in the US

And so you should, a result of consecutive cuts to police funding?

No, New York police funding per capita is less, their Draconian action against ALL crime worked well. we need less PC, and a lot more targeted stop and search based on those that are at the forefront of these murders to be brought back. Quite simple, but hard to bring in given the denial and whining of certain factions.

quite probably, yes... more police officers + longer prison sentences = less crime

IIRC freakonomics covered both of those

edit - found the article/paper.. it is interesting, exposes some of the apparent conventional ideas of what causes crime to fall:

http://freakonomics.com/2006/03/16/lets-do-the-crime-drop-again/

In Chapter 4, we analyze the factors that were widely thought to have been major contributors to the 1990’s crime drop but which, according to the data, weren’t. These factors are:

— The strong economy

— The increased use of capital punishment

— Innovative policing strategies

— Gun control laws

— Concealed weapons laws

— The aging of the population

We also discuss the four major factors that, according to the data, were responsible for the crime drop:

— Increased reliance on prisons

— Increased number of police

— The bursting of the crack bubble

— The legalization of abortion

Absolutely not.

The fact that there may be more police officers crammed into a police station or walking around the corner does NOT magically mean a criminal out there somewhere is magically going to decide not to commit a crime.

Criminal 1: hey lets go commit some crime
Criminal 2: Don't you know they have THREE extra officers in the local constabulary, we better not **** with them.
Criminal 1: ah you're right lets just forget this life of crime and go become perfect law abiding citizens.

Yeah that's not how crime works. And this sort of thinking is simply pushing society deeper into wanting a police state.

People seem to think the police are a bunch of superheroes/batmans or something. And that the mere thought of there being a few extra police officers nearby will magically stop criminals committing crime. This is a very dangerous idea.

The only thing more police can achieve right now is make it possible to dish out more punishments - not reduce the occurrence of crime. The assumption that a richer police force will magically cause less crimes to OCCUR is an extremely dangerous assumption. There is a step which must happen before this is true and people completely ignore that step. It's a transition into a complete police state, that must happen before sheer idea of police numbers is enough to cause crimes to not occur.

Freakonomics is a great example of a popular science book which gained great traction from the public but isn't well regarded by people who actually know anything about the subject.

Re: the particular claim of abortion legalization leading to a crime drop, Wikipedia has some discussion.

I read a comment the other day from a New Yorker who suggested that another reason for a fall in crime is that NY has become very expensive to live in, Criminals simply cant afford to live there any more. Even Harelem is safe to walk in now.

Gentrification. A driving force behind increased and eventual decreased rates in crime.

I know, that abortion claim was particularly controversial.

As I recall, one of the main reasons for the controversy was that Abortion rates are not equal.

A third of all abortions in the US are performed on Black Women, around a third of Black pregnancies end in abortion.

Consider this random article on the subject (I make no claims for its veracity, It is just something I found) http://www.abort73.com/abortion/abortion_and_race/

There was the predictable outrage at the implied suggestion that Violent crime was largely a Black issue, and that a "Genocidal" policy aimed at stopping Black people from breeding had proved an effective strategy for mitigating the situation.

Welcome to America, where mass shootings are no longer newsworthy:

Plus the removal of lead from petrol is also believed to be a factor in falling crime rates.

Aye, something to do with what is basically thought to have been a low level of lead poisoning in children which lead to issues with the development of the brain*.

IIRC there is a very strong corrolation between the sale and use of leaded fuels and a drop in crime and it tracks even on fairly local levels (individual towns or states), whilst things like "being hard on crime" don't, but it only becomes apparent about 20 years after the switch to unleaded fuels in that area (basically either the effects of the lead have worn off, or the first generation to grow up without it in the air).

*I think studies for over a century have shown it can affect the skull size/IQ of children whose parents were exposed to it, and in children exposed to it once born.
