Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" - Amazon Prime TV Show - ETA 2018

Enjoying this so far I have 1 episode left to watch. I am a big fan of the Tom Clancy books and Hunt for red October is one of the best book to film conversions in my opinion. Really disliked the Chris pine film and did not have high hopes for this but I am glad I was wrong.

Looks great in 4K with Dolby Vision on the LG OLED prime app as well.

watch 4 episodes so far my though at the moment without spoils :

  • The french police and swat etc are incompetent
  • Its "ok"
  • Acting feels off some how can't put my finger on it
  • Its a thriller without any tension
  • I want to go and watch "Clear and present Danger" again just for the "street" sequence

I binged this over the weekend. It's okay, but there are a lot of 'wtf?' moments and there's the classic Hollywood thing of having to make some of the security forces, police, etc more stupid to make the lead character seem more exceptional and heroic. I thought the whole thing was a bit generic and it says a lot about how desperate Amazon are to catch up to Netflix that they made such a song and dance promoting the show. In my opinion Homeland series 1 was better than this, as were the early series of 24.

French SWAT were clearly channelling CS:GO - Rush B!!!!

24 and especially Homeland are FAR better than this in terms of overall quality.

How are you getting this in UHD? My LG OLED doesn't allow this in 4k in the Amazon app on the TV, only 1080p. Either that or I was doing something wrong when searching for it.

Finished it today: Wasn't bad (7.5) could see they have spent money on it, with the locations.

Will watch series 2

Thought there was to much padding: His wife bored me senseless and as for the drone guy...

Well I was having major banding on my Nvidia shield and the prime app so switched to the LG app on my 2016 model OLED and was suprised when it came up with dolby vision as I thought it was 2017 onwards that supported it. You have to go to TV genres and then 4k UHD section and watch it from that area otherwise you only get 1080p.

24 and Homeland are better ... when they were good. So that's the first series of Homeland, and the first 3 of 24. Then they stopped being good.

Just be thankful you're not watching it on an Apple TV. They've messed up so it only outputs bad quality stereo. I swear Amazon are gimping the Apple TV on purpose, support are utterly useless. I had to unearth my PlayStation 3 from the back of a dusty cupboard to watch it in acceptable quality.

yeah I didn't get the whole drone guy story branch. Unless it was all just to shoehorn in an explanation why he'd drop a bomb on a lone attack on the woman

But, as a Clancy fan there's more than a few bits that make be cringe

Watched the first few and the "cringe" factor as a massive Clancy fan just got too much for me and I had to quit. I mean it may be OK TV but as a "Jack Ryan" series its pretty poor (the the canon of Jack) but thats just my bias showing. :D

This is just 'The Sum Of All Fears', retold for television. I'm surprised nobody is picking up on that fact. It's the same damn story. The Doctor love interest, a WMD 'activated' by disaffected Russian scientists in Eastern Europe...oh and shipped to 'Baltimore' in both instances too. Even the sudden Helicopter pick up early on. There's almost nothing original about this at all. The only thing missing from the Movie version is the good old fashioned Cold War brinksmanship between Presidents.

It's borrowing heavily from other properties too, as some have rightly pointed out already. 24 and Homeland, also Zero Dark Thirty. Hope they do better with Season 2, if there is one.

it was so-so. Kept me watching but it wasn't quality viewing. I can't take John Krazinski seriously at all with his silly ol' face, and Abbie Cornish is TERRIBLE in everything i've seen her in...just the worst.

Binged watched it over 2 evenings, and bloody loved it. Always been a fan of TC generally and geopolitical thrillers like this. Guess I would like Homeland then? Never watched it.

I liked the mix of action, backstory, and trying to feel bad for the bad guy.

I don't remember anymore Jack Ryan's character from the books...it's been too long, and I stopped reading before he became President.

I was equally confused how he fit in, and the Vegas scene! Maybe he defects to the other side i.e. converts, and they've set it up nicely for Season 2?

An interesting idea, DB_SamX. It might be fun but is likely to be handled poorly (read as: preachy), will no doubt cause a furore about racism/insulting Islam and is treading ground Homeland has walked before.

On a personal level, I really hate the concept behind putting in something that makes zero sense into a series (or film) i the expectation of having it actually mean something in the next season. Even my wife was prompted to say "Well, he was pointless and good luck getting back to your job after your little jaunt. Although he was so unbelievably lucky in Vegas it could happen." :D

It was interesting, really didn't like Greer to begin with but he warmed on me. Krasinski was decent, perhaps because I haven't seen him in much as I never watched US Office but I couldn't see Ryan in a TC book attacking the guy at the gate in Turkey. Or was it Syria? Drone guy was pointless other than social commentary and Cathy being an infectious diseases doctor really didn't have anything to do with the storyline other than to connect some obscure dots. She could still have easily been an Ophthalmologist and the story wouldn't have changed a bit. Will certainly watch S2 and see where they go with it, the ending seemed to suggest some Russian shenanigans are afoot.

Finished watching this last night, quite enjoyed it overall, it wasnt superb but it wasnt cack either, even though the guy playing Jack Ryan constantly reminds me of a real life Wallace and Gromit character with the shape of his face/head. Actually thought that Greer stole the show tbh
