Tomb Raider I - III remaster

I never finished TLR as a kid. I got most of the way through then got lost with the backtracking through levels.

I'm about to do a playthrough of TRIII Remastered having thoroughly enjoyed TRII and The Golden Mask.

Never forget when the very first tomb raider came out

I bought it for my playstation 1 and was playing all night till the time i had go to work in the morning
This game was so amazing back then :):) even with the crazy camera angles

Dam the controls, Were they really that bad when i played it back in the 90's on a playstation :eek::eek:

I keep running into walls :cry::cry: and turning around on the spot is a real pain
Am using an xbox elite series 2 gamepad.

I may try using an old xbox 360 gamepad to see if that makes any difference,
Would really like to try using a playstation 1 gamepad but i don't have one and also don't think it would work on a pc

A lot of games from the early 3D era have aged badly.

Things like controls and cameras have really improved immeasurably. In fact, IMO, those are a bigger barrier to enjoyment of old games than graphics.

In a very strange & weird way i feel the bad controls & very bad camera angles is kind of what made TR1 so good all them years ago :D

You just wouldn't of had the same enjoyment if you could have just ran through the game quickly with simple controls & good camera angles.;)

One thing i noticed is the camera is much closer in the remake compared to the original when you look by pressing the button to flick between the two versions.

Kind of offset by having 16:9 displays now, it was 4:3 or 5:4 (I forget which) back then, and close to the character is the style of the time for 3rd person

Yeah, lots of pioneers in 3D aren't great now. Modern Tomb Raider games have been a bit too much hold up to win imo. The original games had some very obscure paths, but that was expected back then

I like the clunky controls. I only recently tried the reboot franchise, and felt like I wasn't in control - more like I was guiding Lara through set pieces. The specific need to place Lara exactly where required in order to execute the moves is what made the (early) games enjoyable as it turns out.

Yes this. The movement defines the game.

Think the biggest problem with the controls is that the first PlayStation gamepads didn’t have joysticks on them back then, So am thinking the controls were designed to use four buttons instead of a joystick

Yes and keyboard. Me and my Dad played through all of TR1 and 2 on keyboard.

They had the digital D-pad which was a pain the joysticks made things easier but that was later
the regular buttons were still the same action controls (left joystick was movement right was camera)

Are you using modern controls or tank controls?
