seems they are all ready to leave the BBC anyway.

They wouldn't be able to keep the format if they took it to another channel would they?

Im sure between the 3 of them they could buy it off the BBC for 50million and run it themselves on another channel, shouldn't take to long to pay it off

Top gear will likely die as the rights to the top gear name, the stig etc.. will lie with the production company that BBC have now bought out.

I bet there will be no shortage of backers should the production major players and the 3 presenters set up a new production company with a similar theme of mucking about in cars.

The BBC certainly should have protected the format as far as it could, the Stig, the SIARPC but you cannot protect or own 3 middle aged men messing about in cars, even if it is the same 3 men as in TG.

So a some tweaks and changes, the show needs a refresh anyway, similar stunts, events in far flung places, all seem very generic and not protectable. 5th gear has been allowed with similar themes.

The BBC should and probably would put some shots across a competitors bows, but would be limited in how much it could do IMO.

at the end of the day, if you get those 3 to travel abroad somewhere and buy some cheap cars and modify them, set them a challenge to drive them somewhere impossible, then it will be good telly.

You can't copyright that idea.

I do hope it is the end of the line for TG in its current guise, JC is far too old to be acting the prat, the whole larking about thing is a bit boring now. JM is actually very good on the other things he has done, so i hope he does more of that, and as much i like RH, i cant think of anything other than TG that i have liked him in.

Time for a refresh imo. With the info thats in front of us, I dont get why he has so much support.

you realise you are describing 5th Gear. Which was cancelled because no one watched it?

Such a shame, if Top Gear ends, especially now. I actually really liked the car 'review' sections in recent episodes, like the Jaguar piece last week. They're clearly not intended to be informative, but were damn cool and just a blast to watch. Yes, JC is a massive buffoon, but that's what makes him interesting. Also, he is clearly passionate about cars and underneath all the nonsense, he does know what he's talking about.

Thing is, that jaguar piece was a perfect example of how TG uses comedy to make talking about cars entertaining.

The discussion about how many hats you could fit in the F tyre was complete nonsense. But its far more enjoyable to watch than Jonny from 5th gear going on about boot capacity in litres and comparing it with the competition. Most people simply don't care.

THey will quite happily however, sit back and watch clarkson cracking jokes about how you can even fit a busby in there.

It's crazy how much speculation the BBC have allowed to occur around this, everywhere from a punch never actually happened to him hospitalising his producer.
