Top Gun: Maverick

Watched it with my 10 year old son yesterday - we both loved it.
We both watched the ‘86 film the day before. Mainly so he could understand the characters and enjoy the new film better.

Coincidently, we are going to a local air show next Friday where a P-51 Mustang is flying

Oh man what a movie. Awesome cinematography with those bumps, thuds, intensity, pressure and expressions captured during flight. Clearly on another level than the biggest CGI-fest action scenes shot these days which TBH just feel too passive. I'd recommended this to all movie-goers irrespective of genre because of the artwork. Story's quite simple too. Definitely gonna watch this again.

This movie is cheese and nostalgia done right.
The right amount of cheese and homage to the original. I would go as far to say its a great stand alone movie in it's own right. Music/soundtrack will give you goose bumps in places
Yes this is one of my main reflections, they really hit the sweet spot in terms of being nostalgic, even cheesily nostalgic but without going into full on parody territory, it felt comforting rather than forced to hear the soundtrack, one-liners, piano singing, beach games, pilot training etc. I think it would have been very easy to get this wrong, by either overplaying it and making the whole film just a glorified remake/parody or conversely being paranoid like "oh, we can't just do carrier launches to Kenny Loggins AGAIN"... "people won't accept it if we don't have a completely original script" etc. As I mentioned the other day, the fact it's been so long since the original probably helps in this regard, if TG was only a few years old it might not have worked because people would be in the same stage of their life.

Top Gun Maverick

I have to agree with most of what's been said before. Perfect blend of tipping hats to the original and bringing the story up to date.

I have to say that on a couple of occasions I had "something in my eyes" The emotional weight of the film was bang on and the flying sequences were breathtaking. To the point that I felt like whooping, cheering and clapping at times.

The only real downside side was Jennifer Connelly's character sort of being shoe horned in as a love interest for the sake of it. But it didn't really detract form the film other than you have no attachment to her, with not being in the original.

We also watched the original the night before going to the cinema and unless you were around at the time and enjoyed it, it's not aged well. Nowadays it's very very cheesy, with only the flying sequences really holding up.

9/10

Apparently Jennifer Connellys character is mentioned but not seen in Top Gun 1 - I assumed she was created as Kelly McGillis wouldnt be suitable now lol

Top Gun 3 would be a massive mistake.

"Penny" is mentioned as a daughter of an admiral that maverick has fooled around with in the beginning of the original movie, when they are getting chewed out by Mr Strickland from Back to the Future.

Although it's a blink and you'll miss it reference and it doesn't really add anything to her character as they already acknowledge an offscreen on/off relationship in the new movie.

Great film. Just a right amount of nostalgia and callbacks to the first film. So many of the scenes are shot in a way that's very evocative of the first film without being a pastiche or direct copy.

The flying scenes are terrific, and although there's some nitpicks with the story, it's really a character story around Maverick getting to the end of his career with regrets and a last hurrah, and wondering what comes next. Even the relationship with Penny (played by a gorgeous and age appropriate Jennifer Connelly) is to show that Maverick can still have a life when he's no longer a fighter pilot - if he can survive the last mission.

The ending could be seen as a bit silly, and there is the opportunity for a sad ending, but the film is a proper summer blockbuster, with a rollercoaster ride and big hug at the end.

I've not been to a cinema for several years, this film might change that, the trailer looks awesome! Certainly is some nostalgia there, photo of "Ice Man" now an Admiral, Maverick seems to be his old controversial self, possibly a relative/son of Goose mentioned in one of the trailers?

LOL yeah, she didn't age quite so well... though Jennifer Connelly was 16 in real life at the time of the original! Bad Maverick!

I watched the original Sunday night, Penny Benjamin is namechecked a couple of times near the start and Admirals Daughter a few more including by Meg Ryan in the diner scene. IMO it does add to Mavericks character to help paint the picture of him as somewhat of a ladies man :)

On reflection I think the film is as much about how good old machinery is if its looked after well. The Tomcat, the Kawa GPZ, Penny's 911. Even Cruise and Connelly are living proof of this. McGillis not so much though.

I saw it today. Great fun. But I think that too much was left on the cutting room floor, particularly of the ground plot. I would not be surprised if the BD / DVD had a version that was 30-60 minutes longer.

Yes, but this romance started late enough for the young daughter to know about it.

It would have started many years before she was born. The fact the daughter knows means its been on and off over the years.

If you like Top Gun you have to go and see it, great film. I haven't seen an action movie in the cinema since I think Skyfall 10 years ago (mostly just go to kids films these days).
The last film that was as good as this that I've seen in the cinema, must be way way back, maybe Lock Stock back in 1998? I've been on these forums over 20 years and the number of cinema viewings that have prompted to post here is very low.
You come away feeling hyped, wanting everyone else to feel it to.

I was thinking that the opening section about the Mach10 jet felt a bit unfinished, it was a vehicle to show what Maverick is like these days, but it kind of felt like there was some sort of subplot that never got fully uncovered there, whether that was later use of the jet, keeping his crew together for some other purpose, or whatever.
