Top Gun: Maverick

I was thinking that the opening section about the Mach10 jet felt a bit unfinished, it was a vehicle to show what Maverick is like these days, but it kind of felt like there was some sort of subplot that never got fully uncovered there, whether that was later use of the jet, keeping his crew together for some other purpose, or whatever.

I think there's an implication that there are still a few people like Maverick pushing the boundaries, reaching for the stars with this amazing technology, but he's being pulled back by the mundane budget requirements that see him grounded in favour of machinery that excludes the human element of achievement. He's the last of a heroic breed being replaced by machines that have no humanity, so what's the point in aspiring to achieve, if we're all sitting at home watching the machines, instead of actually being out there pushing the limits of our world?

I saw this last night. Best film I've seen at the cinema in AGES. I've been quite spoilt lately as well, because I only watched Everything Everywhere All At Once last week, so two good films in two weeks is great going.

I've got a Cineworld unlimited card, so I'm going to watch it again next week.

Went too watch it again today it is a brilliant film so hard to make another after the original is by far one of the best films ever made.

Shame goose died in the first and then val is very poorly for the sequel but loved it.

No way was this better than the original, 7/10 tops, was ok not 9/10 like the paid reviews floating about, should have been a 3 hour movie good but not great.
should have or should have? Maybe should've?

The movie was a cinematic masterpiece. It beats the first movie in every single way. There hasn't been a movie like this for years and it was worth the wait. For me it was 10/10. LOVED IT.

Just seen it in Imax, well worth it just to listen and see the jets flying around on that size screen, you can clearly see it was shot for real in jets, few times where the actors straps came loose and they flew around the cockpit slightly and pulling G force in their faces.

At least they didn't butcher the soundtrack by trying to do a modern twist and left it pretty much as it was.

They did well with the Val Kilmer scenes and it didn't feel out of place, is it as good as the original not quite but it's good in it's own right and seeing a film use mainly practical effects instead of using CGI all the way through really made this feel like a breath of fresh air.

I think the original was a thing of it's time, and you have to appreciate it that way. If you compare the flying scenes (especially the close ups of the actors) with what we got in Maverick, there's no comparison that the new film is better. In the first film, the cast never went up in a plane, in the new one they all did and you can feel the weight of the realism that would be very costly and difficult to fake well with CGI. I think the new film also has better and more balanced character arcs for the main characters ie there's a lot about where Maverick is going now that he's reaching the end of his career and finding himself labelled a dinosaur with no place in a navy cockpit.

I think the original was great fun for it's time, but the new one has moved on and advanced all aspects without giving up the atmosphere and fun ride of the first one. The new film knows what it wants to be, and does it unashamedly. It doesn't care about whatever messaging is flavour of the week in Hollywood, it just wants to tell an exciting, good story.

Well chuffed as IMAX added extra dates so tickets have been booked to see this. Very much looking forward to my first IMAX screening as well, hope it's as good as I'm expecting, excited!

Got to see it in Imax for my first Imax experience. This film has no right to be as good as it was, every beat was on point and those filming scenes are spectacular, so was all the sound etc.
