Top Gun: Maverick

Just got back, a perfect sequel - 9.5/10, i'm old enough to have seen the 1st one when it came out though, some younger people may not see it iin the same light as the older ones who watched the first one when it was released but plent y for everyone and a must see at the cinema as I think some of the magic will be lost on the tv screen.

Only watched the original the other week - no idea why it's taken me so long to watch it as it was great. Watched maverick today and it was fantastic, nothing else to say really the movie speaks for itself.

I watched the original on Thursday night for the first time and then watched maverick last night at the cinema (price is joke btw). Anyway, don’t get the fuss from either of them it was alright you basically knew everything that was going to happen.

Was watching a video of Top Gun pilots past and present basically said everything you seen the 10Gs etc in teh planes etc where all pretty much spot on and a few technical things they included that they got right, so even then the Hollywood stuff wasn't made up, all o fit seemed like regular manuvours for them.

Yea I saw that, awesome stuff. The Mach 10 stuff obviously not real though haha

Seen today in Imax. Watched the original at the cinema more than once, the soundtrack was one of the first CD's I ever heard so obviously I wanted this to be great.. and it was :)

The moment the rift kicks in over the aircraft carrier a grin spread across my face and it stayed there in all but the moments of peril. Fantastic film up there with the best for me, everything I wanted it to be. I will see it again at the cinema, its a fantastic sequel for me and up there with best recent films.

Just got back, loved the in cockpit views, the beginning music intro part was worth the admission alone for me.
Brilliant that they actually went and sat back seat of the planes to film it for the majority of the time.

Nitpicking the silly SAM placements ala trench run emplacement? And the relationship with the woman was .....pointless.

Still quality film.

Went to see it opening weekend at isense, I had to take a minute when I got out to process some of the action.

What a sequel.

I've been waiting and waiting, went through the whole "just release it on a streaming service already" frame a mind, now I fully appreciate why they didn't and I'm glad I got to experience it properly.

Mission impossible looked pretty good in the trailer also, Tom Cruise killing it.

Went yesterday to the IMAX at Liverpool one.
What a film. Goosebumps galore.
Epic.
Needs to win an Oscar even if just for the ACTUAL flight scenes.

However...
Anyone feel like we had a lot of the actual story back in the 70's when Luke blew up that big black thing in space

Took 20 year old who hasn't seen the first one to see this with me tonight. He thought it was excellent and had just the right amount of call backs to the original to allow him to understand. The opening credits, the tune, even the font was spot on. An excellent film even as a standalone and easily better than the original IMO. 8.5/10.

Loved the opening 5 minutes or so. Great intro!

And the bombing practice run by Cruise has to be one of the most exciting scenes I've watch for a long time. No music, no crappy CGI - just pure action and gripping entertainment.

And the relationship with the woman was .....pointless.

I guess even Maverick has to grow up some time...
Besides, it's a Tom Cruise film, which according to Rich Hall means: "Tom is a [insert job]... pretty good [job] until he suffers a crisis of confidence. Then a beautiful woman helps him get his confidence back, then he's back to being a pretty good [job]"

What a film. Goosebumps galore.

Oh dear... You thought that would go unnoticed? :p

It's seriously good. The whole team quietly hoping that he does it despite themselves, even though they said it was impossible and it's going to show them all up. Jon Hamm as Cyclone, (the admiral who can't stand Maverick) you can see the "oh ****, he's right, it can be done" moment on his face.

Good film? Yes. Better than the original? No.

The original was, dare I say it, a grittier character-driven affair that centred around melodrama and romance, with action and a little bit of humour thrown in. There was also an award-winning soundtrack to boot - not in this one. The sequel is very much focussed on action and has obvious Mission Impossible style influences. The scene where they're stuck behind enemy lines, for example, is utterly preposterous and has zero similarity to the 'realism' of the original. Tony Scott is very much missed in that regard.

I thought the romance angle was completely half-baked and I wasn't interested in Jennifer Connelly's character whatsoever, in stark contract to Kelly McGillis' character.

That being said the film is entertaining and worth the admission fee. I particularly enjoyed the action scenes including Maverick's test flight and glass of water scene at the beginning, and Hangman's 'baddie turned hero' role (which could have been developed a bit more IMO).

should have or should have? Maybe should've?

The movie was a cinematic masterpiece. It beats the first movie in every single way. There hasn't been a movie like this for years and it was worth the wait. For me it was 10/10. LOVED IT.

I don't think it does beat the first movie in my opinion, 80's classic vs something that will be forgotten in a few years with many of the actors in it
