Total War: Warhammer 2

When is tww3 supposed to be coming ?

No news.

Best guess would be next year though. CA have released something every year since 1998. Warhammer 3 most likely the next release. So unless they're skipping a year for the first time in 23 years, WH3 is likely in 2021.

Yes it's next year (barring any major mishaps), we are reaching close to the end of the TWW2 lifecycle now.

Thanks - I saw the new expansion pop up on steam but they are milking tww2 quite dry now. Still if it gets good reviews I normally pick them up!

I just wonder whether TWW3 will be a de-facto add on to TWW2, just like TWW2 was to TWW1. I've got no complaints if it is, though if they expand the ME map even more it would be enormous! Not entirely against that though!

Can someone explain to me exactly what Total War Warhammer actually is?

I always thought that Total War games were tactical battles between two sides chosen using a set number of points for the units in each force.

But looking at TW Warhammer, it seems like the game is basically much more similar to a Civ game, with city management and expansion.

The actual combat element, which I believe is the games origin, now seems to be a secondary consideration and sometimes completely avoidable letting the AI decide the outcome.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just not what I expected?

Exactly the same I would say but with monsters, magic and everything in-between ,more learning as there is a LOT more variety of units between races and how they play.

Was there always that much emphasis on management of cities and your army outside of the traditional battles?

And has there always been the option to skip certain battles as well?

Genuinely interested as I never really got into the Total War series, apart from Time Commanders of course :p:D

The basic game mechanics haven't changed since Rome: Total War (2004). The first two entries in the series (Shogun and Medieval) were a bit different, but only in that the campaign map was much simpler (more like Risk).

Time Commanders was based on the battle part of Rome: Total War only.

Ah ok got it.

Which is probably why I always thought the Total War series was limited to just tactical battles, my bad.

Wood elves, without doubt the toughest faction to beat, I never fight them without a 2-1 advantage.

I assume they are about to get harder to face.

I agree with you in most examples, but Skaven can be really mean and an artillery heavy empire drives me mad most of the time.

Skaven warlock, single handedly bringing the smack down with them doom bolt attacks or whatever they are every 2 seconds...forgot about them!

Empire artillery is powerful unless the opponent is Bret's , flying cavalry will run circles around you.

As which faction?

I find Wood Elves start off really strong. The combination of high ranged damage and high mobility is a massive challenge for some factions. Dwarfs have it worst; it's impossible to forc the Wood Elves to engage in melee, and you're pretty much guaranteed to lose a missile fight. Skaven have similar problems. But later in the game, both of those factions unlock technologies and units which level the playing field. Wood Elves vs buffed Flame Cannons? Burn, you wretches! :D

I've never had the same problems with Brettonia or The Empire. And with Vampire Counts, a few stacks of Zombies or Skeletons will do the trick; it's difficult for the Elves to skirmish when your units cover the width of the map, 15 ranks deep :p
