Toyota Yaris GR4 4x4 Rally going into production.....

The GT86 is one of the best “out of the box” driving cars you can buy.

I’d take a purpose built RWD sports car over a turbo hatch everyday of the week.

Like you said above, it’s not all about power.

Ive got a purpose built gutless RWD sports car and having owned S2000’s and driven GT86 both on road and track Id prefer the S2000 it’s more of a thrill but only as a weekend car. If I had to take one as a daily I’d take the GT86 because of the better cabin and space. But a dry day, country roads I’d take S2000 every time it’s far more an event and the engine is way more special and feels vastly superior to the GT86 up top. But the S2000 loses a lot of its appeal for me if I have to drive it roof up.

Id concede and say the GT86 has the ability to be modded into something very capable however for track work or a very good drift car. But in stock trim I’ve not found the GT86 that exciting and I normally go for purpose built RWD cars.

I guess my failing is I’ve never driven a GT86 that has had some light modifications done to it or a supercharged one as even though it’s not about power I simply found the stock GT86 uneventful on road and track and it was not all about lack of power there was something else and I simply could not put my finger on it.

But they all need revving

This!
M5 extremely so, 2 tonne of weight the car has an almost like Vtec punch when you pass around 6500rpm.
S2000 is dead under 6000rpm then goes mental and is extremely addictive.
458 engine is a masterpiece it pulls hard from around 2500 and just never eases off unlike the M5 and S2000 there is no apparent feel of cam change it just revs extremely fast but it does have quite a bit of torque too and of course it weighs nothing and I suspect transmission losses are also minimal too.

Im an NA junky and always have been, turbo rush is great but for me nothing beats the sound and high revving nature of a special NA engine. May not be the fastest but it’s not all about performance and the Yaris has surprised me it’s not as laggy as expected and they are eager to rev out, pretty good for a small engine with a single turbo.

Even supercharged I find the GT86 quite uninteresting to drive. There's nothing particularly wrong with it as a car, it's well balanced, steering is weighted well and direct etc.

Granted the my old MX5 was 180kg or so lighter but it was more enjoyable to drive in every way to a GT86 with the same 280hp, although the GT86 does trump it by a good margin in the interior quality department.

I do think I need to drive a different supercharged one though, I don't think a centrifugal type supercharger suits the engine very well

Edit: You can thank all of the modern advancements for the Yaris feeling as good as it does for a turbo charged car.

The combination of more modern turbo technology as combined with Dual VVT and the higher compression ratios that Direct injection allows.

Yeah worth a punt i guess it reminds me of the Gt86 hype with it being a Toyota and that was very flat when i experienced one (only from passenger i admit)

You downgraded, should have stuck with the MK3 MX5 :p(I think you had one before it?)

I did indeed. I find the GT86 a better drive overall, but there isn't a lot in it. I miss having a drop top, but on the flip side the Toyota is more practical, and handles better out of the box. In the seven years I've owned it, I've had it modified slightly to address the power deficiency, but haven't felt the need to touch the handling.

That said, my MX5 wasn't the best example and I think the Mk3 is generally considered the weakest of the family. I'd like to try the ND.

Getting back on topic, I love that the GR Yaris exists, and the formula should be right up my street...but I don't really find myself getting excited by hot hatches. Even though this isn't strictly speaking a hot hatch as its more of a purpose built homologation car, I'm not sure it's something I could fall for...call me shallow if you will. But if I was in the market for a fast hatch, I would find the Yaris a much more attractive proposition than other, much more powerful hatches.

Gotta rag the arse off of them round some twisty B-roads. Maybe sideways round the roundabout on the way to Tesco. :D

I haven't driven a newer MX5 (NB2 is the newest I've driven) so I can't compare it to a NC/ND, but I guess the 86 is like an MX5, for people who might need a back seat every once in a while. The interior is a little nicer too I think, and I like the styling of the original. The new one I don't think looks anywhere near as good!

I swapped mine for an Elise last year and wouldn't go back, it's in a completely different league than the gt86. I did consider trading it in for a Yaris, but I feel like I've done the hot hatch thing and I think I'd regret it massively after a few weeks.

The gt86 is a lot better than the mk3 MX-5 though (I also had one). Except for the gear change.

The gear change in my MK3 was worse than than the GT86. But everyone always says how brilliant it is, which makes me think I might have had a bit of a tired example.

Another reason to laud the Yaris too, the inclusion of a manual gearbox. Nice to see on a new car.

It is a very nice manual too, more or less on par with the S2K, only weakness in comparison is when trying to shift fast at top of rev range (not done this in my car yet) as they seem not too frilled by that, but could also be simply the nature of a turbocharged manual car, the S2000 is mega precise, rifle bolt and love being shifted fast on those 9000rpm gear changes. Having driven many Porsches who also make solid manuals, the manual in the Yaris is on par. I am past 200 miles now so been pushing brakes harder and have to say the brakes are simply amazing in this car, powerful but incredible feel and modulation.

I'm not really a hot hatch person and indeed wasn't even in the market for a 2nd car. But this came along and excited me and is affordable, so I thought why not. It's perfect for all the rainy nasty days where I'd rather not use the 4C (mainly the visibility is an issue) and the 5 year warranty with track use really made me think OK I can use the Yaris on track then change the 4C to something really special I'm too afraid to track...

Hopefully end of next week I'll have mine :d, excited.

Think you will love it, Toyota seem to have been able to make an AWD car that is far from numb and just full feel, though it is capable of landing you in huge trouble with the police simply due to the speeds it can carry, it is also full of feel and fun at legal speeds too, quite an achievement for an AWD car, particular a modern one, my EVO X had 415HP and was crazy capable car but was very tyre sensitive and could be numb at more legal speeds, the Yaris seems more alive, I think as others who have driven it have commented what is really helping the Yaris is that low weight.

Cannot wait to get more miles on it as I am still resisting full throttle, only quirks I've found so far which is no doubt due to it been a 3cyl is it does like some revs to pull off even sedately.

If you don't like it, moving it on at a profit shall be easy, the FB groups are full of people trying to buy people's cars lol.
