Toyota Yaris GR4 4x4 Rally going into production.....

Have to agree there, you get accustomed to it very quickly and I also didn't mind it too much. But... it definitely sounds better turned off, and you really realise this once it is all turned off.

Now you have spent more time with the car and with 300HP, how do you think it truly compares to something like your Scoob and my EVO X, have Toyota made a mini Scoob/EVO that is truly as capable as those cars were or is it all just the hype and people have truly forgotten how amazing the EVO 9/10's were and the special Subarus?

I won't be cancelling mine as I cannot wait, but I would think the question on many peoples minds is for less money they could buy a spot less low mileage EVO X FQ-360 or one of the factory special Subaru's and then it would be interesting how you feel it compares to those, or does the lightness of the GR and its modern tech make it the better car as long as you don't need back doors and a boot.

Yaaaaaas.

Tested the ITG panel filter today at MRC. It made 1-3bhp throughout the rev range, so not bad at all for just a swap in filter.

Well dunno how true it is but RRG Toyota in Macclesfield might be willing to fit DTUK boxes and maintain warranty if true is pretty good.

Read so much about the GRY now, i’m tempted but it’s either my blue oval loyalties holding me back or it just doesn’t look right. Doesn’t have the presence on the road or styling. Anyway I’ve made inquiry to the local dealer, guess the test drive will have to wait till lock down ends.. See if it grabs me more then.
It will need to be a daily, should we get back to daily drives to work! ..... (Black with circuit pack would be my choice)

With such long lead times is it not getting close to say wait a bit longer for the first round of trade ins to come up as people’s PCP ends.

First cars were getting delivered around November I think and minimum PCP term I think was 2-3 years so the very earliest ones won’t be ending until late 2022 and going into 2023 whereas new orders placed today are scheduled for Nov/Dec.

Many many many people are caught up on the "it's just a Yaris" message. But it's not just a Yaris with some performance parts, once you see it and drive it, you'll get it :)

This!

Having owned a 911 and driven many 911's the test drive reminded me so much of how a 911 feels so well built and tough. Apart from the low rent cabin, the actual car felt like it was built to 911 standards, by that I mean it felt like the kind of car you could drive to a track day, track it all day and do so several times a year and never fear that something is going to break, infact more so in the Toyota simply because having done around 20-30 track days in a 911 it gets mega expensive fast, especially when you need to replace a set of ceramic disc and other consumables, the Toyota feels tougher, because it is the suspension setup I believe is the full rally car spec so in theory you could drive this car on a bumpy gravel rally stage and the suspension would not snap/break whatever.

Also its expensive, but at same time is it, a car that is truly bespoke, it is no Yaris all it shares I think is the lights and mirrors, everything else is bespoke to this car, brakes, engine, suspension, body panels, I mean how many hot hatches come with carbon roofs? This is a car built by engineers and left to the engineers, hence the price, but factor in the price could increase to 36k levels in future, factor that 100k mile / 5 year warranty, well I was like OK this has me interested, the fact they were offering interest free at £299 month just made my man maths go on red alert and I had to have one. Worse case in couple of year it loses 10k, best case it loses a couple grand or you break even after miles of fun and low cost motoring.

There's always going to be an element of that, when I told my mum I was looking at a Yaris she looked at me like I was a fruit loop, she was driving a Yaris at the time, no amount of explaining makes it right, only car people will understand.

Used to get similar with my 147GTA, which had wide arches and v6 etc, say you have a 147 abd you'd hear oh my mum had one of those blah, blah, it's just something you have to deal with.

Shame really the Yaris is more bespoke it could have detached itself from the main car with another name entirely as there's no crossover really with typical Yaris owners and this.

Simple really you buy a car for you, yourself not to applease others.

The comments I got when I sold my 911 to buy a Mustang, people thought I'd lost the plot.
I also had some comments when I got the Ferrari in yellow, why did you not buy red as you should buy red because that is the colour everyone buys one in, well after looking at all the colours I preferred yellow and I paid more to get a yellow one lol. :D

Buy it for you, who cares what others thnk. :)

There won't be any discounts!

I really think the price will go up a few grand, mainly due to Brexit.

I am not sure on the shipment cost for cars, but they tend to come via sea on ships, on deck, containers etc.

Let me just share this info with you guys, OcUK imports lots of stock from China region in containers, shipping a container used to cost us around £2000 per container, they are now costing us £10,000 plus per container.
The shipping price has more than quadrupled.

Prices are going to absolutely rocket in the UK on goods at this rate, BREXIT is an utter failure, then add Covid into this whole mess and the prices of goods in general is about to get really ugly, I will be amazed if Toyota do not increase pricing, I suppose the one advantage a company like Toyota might have is maybe they own the ships and shipping company so they can somewhat absorb cost, but generally shipping of goods by sea is exploding, air freight as more than tripled too, sad times.

If I was on fence about buying a GR Yaris, I would get the order in now, coupled with its success and the shipping rates exploding, the price will go up unless Toyota are happy to lose more than they are already doing so on these cars.

Toyota RRG Macclesfield are now offering DTUK tuning boxes for £600 fitted, easy 300HP and maintains warranty.
They shall also be offering HKS intakes and exhaust systems, again compliant with warranty.

Guess thats where I shall be taking mine, not one for tuning boxes but plenty of people seem to be going down that route and are more than happy with results. :)

Box, intake and exhaust fitted and retain warranty? That's dreams coming true - wouldn't need much more in a Circuit Pack car. Lord I want one so badly.

Seems the case yes contact RRG Macclesfield!

SVM are releasing a 340HP kit too, not released details yet but I’ve requested more info!

SVM have also released a ceramic brake kit which seems total over kill for this car as in my experience of cars I find steel brakes always trump ceramics in feel and modulation plus cost far less. Main advantage of ceramics is really looks and lack of dust plus they do last longer for road use.

If I could put steels on my 458 I would but it was never an option unfortunately.

Harry Metcalfe review tonight @ 5pm, should be a good one and includes a little bit of time with the Litchfield car aswell. All aboard the hype train choo choooooooo.

The Nitrons at £2500 is cheap and rather tempting might end up throwing a load of money at Litchfields on this car. :)

I like the sound of string theory’s height adjustable spring kit. Proper geo & corner weighting possible but shouldn't be huge money. I still want an exhaust for it but can't help think it's a waste, and they all seem rather expensive so far. Tuning box first, then springs then trackdays.

Should track it stock first so you have a basis of where you can go from. :)

Remember when I first got the M3 and took it Donnington as it was and I think best I got out of it was 1:28ish in dry national lap. Then the last time I took it which was with 80% mods I did I got it down to 1:21 on less sticky tyres (super sports) unfortunately I never took it with the new diff and about 50kg less weight or tried stickier tyres but it’s safe to say it would have been around 1:18ish

I think the Yaris might be great stock so will enjoy it stock and I’ll see if Litchfields will lend me their car as I know Ian and I also know Curtis who designed the Nitrons for the car as he is a mate from the iOS Powerstation days and his uncle works at Kingston so should be able to sort a nice discount on the kit fitted at Litchfields for me. :)

That is just the muffler as well, not a full exhaust. For any power gains you need to change the whole thing and how much is that going to cost...

Some people have said their TRD exhausts have gone rusty as well (on other cars). So the quality of the SS might not be great. A bit of a rip off if so.

Surely the best bang for peoples moneys is a tuning box, easy 20-30HP for £300-400, not detectable by a dealership if you remove it before visits and it gives a solid power increase.

If exhaust and stuff are gaining only 10HP and cost 2k then what is the point, why pay to make it sound good for the sake for other people to hear, just keep the fake noise on and enjoy it in the cabin.

Agreed. Though I suppose it really depends how far you plan to take it. Spending £2K on opening up the exhaust might be worth the 10hp and noise for now if you plan to also do turbo mods later.

Though personally I would wait until more fully tested tuning options came up before spending too much.

Agreed if your gonna turn it into a 400HP car then you gotta spend your money and do it right, full exhaust, new turbo, proper remap along with other supporting modifications, probably cost 5-10k of which you'd never get back if you sold it or very little off.

I would say exhausts, for noise reasons, are the most popular mod done. The preferred route is to turn off the fake noise and have real noise from a better sounding system.

if you want to see expensive look at the JCR website for a titanium one, over 3K.

Also exhaust pricing is very much dependent on the marque of the car, its following / demand along with how much profit they think they can make etc.

A budget system on the Ferrari is £6000 and the systems you'd want are more like 10-15k, yes I get they are cars sold in small volumes so the R&D is expensive and they can only ever hope to sell so many systems, but at the same time the manufacturers assume if someone pays 200k for a car, then they won't mind paying 10-20k for an exhaust either. Thankfully the 458 and my SVR before it sound amazing on the stock exhaust so I never needed to drop thousands to get it sounding nice.

The GR Yaris we shall see, in my view a 30k car does not warrant 2k on a exhaust that is still never gonna sound amazing, its no Subaru or V8 end of the day, unless it yields more like 20-30HP its not worth it, plus as the GR is a car your likely to be driving fast then its probably best to keep it quiet on the outside so you don't stand out so much. The fake noise it makes is very pleasing, my only considerations at the moment are a tuning box and wrap to a colour I like.

I don't think any exhaust would give a 30hp improvement on a forced induction engine. They may help a remap work better with lower back pressure. That said the CAT is more likely to be a the bigger cause, so fitting a sports CAT would help more.
The Titanium ones are promoted as a weight reduction item, seems a bit OTT on an affordable road car!!! So it's the enhanced sound your really buying with a 5-10 HP possible increase.
I like the look of what RS Fabrications are doing, bit better prices and dyno used to support the development.

My EVO X went from 358HP to I think it was 390-400ish (can't remember exact number) with a full Milltek turbo back system. Forge then fitted a larger intercooler which took the car to 415HP. In short my EVO X gained a solid 60HP with just two bolt-on modifications. The car was never remapped.

Modern cars have adaptive ECU's and dependent on manufacturer the factory ECU map can self learn to better fuels, better flow etc and adjust the map as appropriate using knock sensors, maf sensor etc.
When I took my EVO to one of the famous mappers at the time who ran it also on his dyno to confirm it was running such good power, which it did he explained that the ECU map, particular on the FQ-360 has a wide adaptive range and that remapping it would have yielded so little it would have been a waste of money. He said it made sense on the 300-330 models as they rear the max range of the adaptive ECU so will only hit 350-360 horses, hence a remap is needed to get them up towards 400 levels.

As so little is know about the GR Yaris yet, for all we know the stock ECU might respond very well to some good breathing modifications, we already know that the RS fabrication exhaust and ITG panel filter both deliver close to 15HP without touching the ECU. It is fair to say the real bottle neck in the GR Yaris exhaust is the front pipe more so and it is there I believe there could be yet another 10-20HP on the table, especially if coupled with a high flow catalyst, I'd not be surprised to see a front pipe and high flow catalyst even with stock catback still fitted pushing these cars to 290-300 levels, then add your tuning box and your at 320-330 levels, then throw in rest of exhaust and panel filter and maybe a solid 330 is possible, it will just be down on how flexible the stock ECU map is.

I believe more modern ECU's, for example in my RS, even with better breathing don't always yield much better results as they are "mapped" to deliver specific power and torque outputs, so even with better breathing they will still level out at the same point. It's no longer a simple case of getting more fuel and air in and exhaust out if the ECU won't make use of it. Early day's as yet, this surely will be a popular tuners gold mine for years to come.

True, that was same case on my Mustang, bolt on as much as I wanted but the power would be 415HP every run, factory or bolt-on, the moment put a new map in that lets the knock sensors work with more flexibility and it was reading 460HP.

The fact the GR Yaris as already shown some healthy gains from just an exhausts, leads one to hope and cross my fingers that Toyota have left the stock map somewhat adaptive.
