Traffic filters will divide Oxford into six '15 minute' neighbourhoods

Exactly. It’s pretty clear at this point that humans cannot be trusted to make good decisions. What we want is the easiest option. Almost always. We then want someone to tell us it’s not our fault for being weak willed.

Psychology is always being used to manipulate people because you can’t expect them to make good choices on their own.

Then again there are those who cannot always make good decisions even if they want to, since you speak of psychology.

In other areas of life we'd protect them rather than punish.

Old cities might not have been built around cars, but have you seen new build housing estates? Zero provision for car parking at all. It’s utterly horrible. One of my friends lives in Portishead and the new developments around the docks are absolutely rammed with cars parked on every pavement, because all the 2 bed flats rented to 2 adults, have 0 or only 1 parking space.

I live in the centre of Bristol which recently introduced a ULEZ. The air is noticeably better and there are less cars here. I was told my house and Bristol itself would soon die a death, when the reality is, it’s better and more popular than ever.

We must make car driving a second choice by making it unaffordable by having car drivers pay for the damage they cause to a city and the space they take up, whilst offering good alternatives. Sadly only London has gotten the latter correct.

Like with some other posters this seems more like an ideological assault on motorists rather than an actual desire to fix the problem... and will largely punish the people least able to afford it and in many cases not impact the people "guilty" of the most wrong doing.

I'm generally against making driving unaffordable. Makes it seem ok for the rich to pollute as long as they pay a bit more and punishes the poor. I'd much rather see LTNs or other traffic filters that impact everyone equally.

I do think it is unavoidable that free parking on main through routes will have to go in order to use public land for everyone else's benefit to actually travel and not store private property.

I drive everywhere, I have a double drive way in the most expensive postcode in my major city. I paid a significant premium for that. We have residents parking permits and still people fight over spaces. I love driving and hate walking any where.

People should not have the right to store a car on public property and have the damage caused by cars subsidised by society so much. We need to make car drivers pay and make car driving a privilege. At the same time, cars are the only viable option for pretty much everyone. This needs to change. It’s why it’s so important there is a viable alternative in place. It’s not idealogical. Cars are horrendous for health and cost. If everywhere had public investment to bring us all close to London’s public transport Britain would be significantly better off, a nicer place to live and healthier.

Making it unaffordable before providing a much better system would indeed be punishing the poor. Currently not offering them any choice but having to spend a significant amount of their wages on a car is punishing, when the state should and could be providing a better alternative.

well here is the London mayors perspective on those that are against things like this.

Well that says enough for me:

Piers Corbyn was also present outside the town hall, although there is no suggestion he was holding an offensive placard. Mr Corbyn, the brother of former Labour leader Jeremy, is known for his views that the coronavirus pandemic was a hoax and that Covid vaccines are dangerous.

Hes not wrong. Just about everyone Ive seen complain loudly about it are the same ones that do the complaining in the right wing/anti woke and covid threads and Tories/right wing press and nutters on Twitter.

Speaking at a public Question Time session in Ealing on Thursday, the mayor of London said: “What I find unacceptable is those people with legitimate objections, joining hands with some of those outside, who are part of a far-Right.

“Let’s call a spade a spade; some of those on the outside are part of the far-Right, some are Covid deniers, some are vaccine deniers, and some are Tories.”

I love the "and some are Tories" bit.

“spade a spade”is that a racist term he used, so he is far right then.

Don't be such a diddums

Words have always been hijacked, example gay is different to what it was 200 years ago.

Some people get offended by that phrase.

Call a Spade a Spade: from Classical Phrase to Racial Slur:

" A significant chapter shows how the innocuous proverbial phrase became a racial slur in the written media. "

Unfortunately, we live in a digital era and adoption of words has rapidly evolved.
